Hi All,

So the Wulfen book took the elite Iron Priest and shipped him out to the HQ slot and bumped him up 25 points. As far as I can see, this now puts him in direct competition with the wolf guard battle leader, who's pretty similar. I am discussing thunder wolf characters only here.

This does mean that the elite section of the Champions of Fenris book needs some attention. What do we put in to stand in for the old priest? You can take 2 servitors if you don't take any iron priests, or wolf scouts I suppose.

Secondly, now with points and wounds and slot change, is the rune priest better than taking a battle leader? I think the WGBL is more expensive as the 2+ save needs 25 points then you buy a fist or T hammer, where these are included with the priest. The difference is that the WGBL can pick up a storm shield and doesn't have to go for expensive war gear. In fact, he can rock in at a measly 100 points.

Does the access to cyber wolves make a difference? Now that you can buy Fenresian wolves as a formation, I'm not sure it matters quite as much.

Iron Priest is far superior than the WGBL point for point wise. Only reason to take WGBL is for the Relics. I run Libby conclave with my Wolfstar so I don't really care much for a rune priest.

Wolf scouts are so garbage, I rather just taking a Wolf Unleash Detach and run 2 grey hunters squads.

Iron Priests are the new hotness in the HQ slot. They were good before and they only got better. Unfortunately, the elite slots is where the question lie. I'm not a big fan of running naked Servitors for mandatory slots so I've been toying around with the mandatory options. You can run 2 troops or 2 elites depending on what detachment you want to run with and still get the 1-6 HQ slots for the star.

I'm looking at the Wolf Guard on bikes with a Frost Sword or 2 Frost Claws on the Sergs for Warp Spider hunting, as they as heavily engrained in my local meta atm. But you can really do whatever you want in this slot. The buff to WS from the CotGW is pretty nice for the Wold Guard Bikers though!

It's definitely a preference though. SonsofVulkan likes the grey hunters in pods where I am a fan of bikes. T5 and the ability to jink is too good to pass up for me. Plus the extra mobility is nice. I don't really care too much about their damage output in the shooting phase as that doesn't really matter in my particular situation. On that note, I don't think Grey Hunters provide too much besides 1-2 special weapons, which adds to their "mandatory" costs.

Ever think to run the Iron Priests within a Wolf Scout squad during deployment, then utilize the Scout move?

12" Scout Move (maintain the coherency with the 6" scouts via cyberwolves).
12" Normal Move (leave the Scouts behind, they can remain and Snipe)
d6" Run
12" Move on turn 2
2d6" reroll Charge

... that's 39"+ turn 2!

Exactly MekLen! That's one of the main tactics for the Wolfstar. Generally you ally in another army to get Hit and Run AND Scout though. The best source would be Dark Angels Ravenwing Command Squad. Azreal and Sammael warlord traits give you an additional +3 inches to run/turboboost and another 3" on charges. Azrael provides a 4++ to the entire group and Sammael keeps up with the cavalry better. Each have their pros and cons, but the Command squad provides Scout and autopass HnR (with a DA Command Banner).

12" Scout, 12" Normal Movement, 6+3" Run (and 15" Turboboost on the bikes from the Command Squad).
12" Movement and a 12+3" Potential Assault.

Potential 60" threat range on the cavalry (66" with the bikes) Turn2. (52" on averages (with IPs,) (44" minimum)

Edit: Since you include models without Fleet (the bikes), you don't get to reroll the charge distances though. D:

People were saying servitors can not be taken to fulfill the elite slots in CoTGW formation due to the thrall rule.

I noticed that Thrall rule as well. But how I read it was it meets the mandatory requirement for the detachment but doesn't fill the FOC slot. Meaning if you wanted to you could have 10+ solo Servitors if you wanted to. I mean someone could throw it up in YMDC, regardless I won't be using them. The fact that they don't take up a slot doesn't change the fact that they are an elite choice you purchased. I don't see many people that I play with caring.

Also, the Heralds of the Ancient formation, IWND + -1BS vs + Reroll initial save each phase. Go bikes and Wolf, blammo!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Going dual Servitor does work. Cheap maybe, but yes unlimited quantities possible, and they do capture objectives (Unlike Lone Wolfs)
