Subject: Space marine librarian - offense or defence?

Lesser Daemon of Chaos

The reason I ask this is because I have a siege assault vanguard army in mind, and was wondering if my librarian would be best suited to keeping my devastator centurions/devastators alive turn 1 while waiting for reserves come in, or adding to the offensive force of: shield eternal/relic blade siege master + TH/SS terminators delivered via assault ram.
Thoughts?

If your going to put him on offense keep him cheap. He's not a combat monster and no amount of gear is going to change that. I also feel that the shield Eternal is a waste on a 2w model, as anything strong enough to double him out will probably kill him through wound attrition even if they can't double them out. At most give him Terminator armor and possibly a normal SS, though even that seems unneeded.

The shield is for my captain, not the librarian.
The librarian has terminator armour and psyker upgrade.
The siege master (captain) has the sword and shield and is basically going to tank for the terminators.
That's why I'm torn, is it overkill for both to go with the terminators? Would the librarian be better off hanging backfield and casting endurance or some defensive powers on the centurions to keep them alive?

Do both. Librarian in termie with storm shield is only 100 points. Can tank a few shots if needed or can cast to buff or offense. He'll never beat a captain in cc though

I wouldn't get him in CC if I could avoid it. Better at being a psyker than a CCer. Maybe you could invest in more than 1 librarian if you have the points.

Even if I had any spare points - the army is small for its points, I've been fighting with having too few guys as it is, even before adding another character - I've used up all my HQ slots :(
