Good morning/afternoon/evening. I am a recent convert to X-Wing (literally within this week) and have become totally enthralled. There's a modestly good sized group at my FLGS and I have a few friends who all also interested.

I want to build a fleet for each faction for several reasons: variety, teaching others, and this game is incredibly affordable so why not?

At the moment, I have a core starter and a FA starter.

My Imperial Fleet consists of x2 TIE/LN and x2 TIE/FO. I'm thinking of adding a Lambda and the Imperial Aces exp next.

My Rebel Fleet consists of a T-65 and a T-70. I'm thinking about adding either a K-Wing or the Rebel Aces exp next.

As for starting a S&V Fleet, I'm thinking the Most Wanted exp and the StarViper. Possibly the YV-666 as well.

Thoughts? Are there things that are a must have addition to begin with?

Welcome to the game!

My suggestion would be picking up a Firespray-31 and/or a YT-1300, not only because the ships are good, but because you can get your hands on the Veteran Instincts EPT, which is very useful.

One (kind of) unfortunate aspect of the game is buying ships purely for the upgrade cards, but it pays off when building lists.

The box sets (elites, most wanted, etc...) are great for expanding the use of existing ships as well.

Good luck!

Firesprays, Z-95s, Y-Wings and HWKs all also have the benefit of being dual force ships:

The Firespray can be Imperial or Scum
Z-95s, Ys and HWKs can be Rebel or Scum.

You will need one copy of the "Most Wanted" pack to get the pilot cards for the Scum versions of those ships, but it's a pretty great way to expand multiple forces with minimal purchases. As an added benefit, all 4 of those ships are pretty solid, commonly used choices.

Try to balance point totals between the forces. Example, having 100 points of TIES is 8 ships... 100 points of X-Wings is 4 ships.

Play and buy the ships you like.

If only there was a cheaper way to get another 4 more TIEs and two more X-Wings than getting more core sets Does anyone know of the best place to pick minis up for a good discount?

I'd be leery of getting more basic X-wings. Get the blister one, and you'll have enough (because one day you'll get the Rebel Transport and score a third one... the astromechs are just too good to pass up)

Get some T-70s instead. The Integrated Astromech in that blister will make it worth your while and fix your basic x-wing to boot. It's more expensive, yeah, but you get more mileage out of it.

Mathieu is right... one more blister X-Wing and at most 2 Blister TIEs for a similar reason. You'll pick up the Imperial Assault Carrier (or Two) to fill out your TIE needs.
