So ive been think and toy with the idea of starting a 30k. I play all sons of Dorn in 40K, and alpha but i think i want to do them in 30K. Then again the Iron hands and Emperor's Children look awesome too. Any thoughts about what book to start with, or army to try a start, what units are good and bad, etc.

all units are good. there is really no good/bad like 40k has. by extention 30k is also not competative; it's a fluff game, not a WAAC game.

Beyond that, build whatever army you like the fluff of and looks cool. I LOVE thousand sons, however, there was nothing for them when I started, so I went with DG since I like the scheme, fluff, and what not.

Whats the average cost for like 2-3000 pts of 30k/

depends on how you build it. If you like MK IV and go calth (non veterans, go tactical squads) the price can be as low as 300 dollars. If you go with more FW/vehicles it can be a lot more. Stalk ebay and the swap shop and you should be just fine. I've probably spent 700-800 on my ~22k of points of 30k.

wait a bit and pick up the 2 red books (crusade list and legions) as the crusade list holds the full army list, and the legions book will have all the legions currently released.

But importantly wait for them, the ones out at the moment are being replaced with updated ones soon. Don't get them yet or they'll be out of date really quick.

No unit is bad, but some do very spefic things. Like breachers are a pretty "meh" unit in a lot of situations except when playing zone mortalis were they suddenly become amazing.

Or if the Breachers are actually the Meduson Immortals, where they get Armor saves, Invuln saves and FNP, plus that whole snap fire rather than sweeping advance, which is pretty neat.

Nice i think im between Alpha Legion, or Raven Guard.

70% of the armies will basically be the same. marines.

The cheapest way outside of the CN or RU will be any Mk4 armor since calth.

Pick an army that uses them the most so you save on money and resin issues.

You need mainly those then some vehicles or dreads to spice em up.

and eventually the characters.


edit: GO alpha they use mark 4. RG IIRC use mostly beaky mk6(?)

Both are cool choices. Im presently working on Raven Guard, Infiltrate, Furious Charge and the Raven's Talons won me over. Plus their nice models.

Both used both. You can pretty much justify any armour in any legion.

This is always a difficult one but Id agree with a lot of others have said, read some fluff on all the chapters in the books or on lexicanium and see what speaks to you deep down.
I can personally say its thanks to Ravens Flight by Gav Thorpe I started my Istvaan Surviving Raven Guard Army.

AL special rules are mutable tactics, meaning that you can pick a special rule from a certain list of available special rules (army-wide infiltrate ftw!) that all Alpha Legion units will get.
The other one is martial hubris, which means that if you lose more stuff than your opponent, your opponent gets a VP.
