I've 6 metal rail guns from the old broadsides and They've been gathering dust in my bits bin for a while now. I'm considering using them to make some old school broadsides using the new models, but I'm not sure how legal/acceptable people would find this. What do you all think?

well i don't see a issue , i mean old school broadsides are crisis suits with sms arms , back plate for the jet pack and the rail guns . so long as you already have the parts i dunno what people can say

100% acceptable.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

There would probably be a few people harping you about size and whatnot, but anyone who remembers the origin of the Tau would have no problems with it. Personally I dislike the new Broadsides because they 1.) look like Tau Dreadnoughts while not being anywhere close to them and 2.) totally breaks the original fluff of them being a variant of the XV8 Battlesuit (they were designated XV88 because the second 8 indicated heavy weapons deployment).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

In general I agree, but there are some squat owners out there who would like to speak with you...

The only time this is ever really an issue is when old/new models have some kind of massive scale difference, in which case you might get accusations of MFA (for example, if the current model is much larger than the old model, it's easier to hide the older one behind terrain, such as with things like the ancient Tyranid monsters, 2nd ed Terminators, etc). Usually, a short conversation with your opponent should clear it all up.

When in doubt, I usually try to make my kitbashes approximately the same size as the currently available kit, especially if the current one is bigger. You can do this by adding a scenic base or some other bulk to make the profile taller or wider.

They break the fluff because the XV8 designates that they are mass-class 8, but are significantly larger than Crisis suits but not big enough to be XV9s. So they are more like XV8.5 8 right now. They are still heavy weapons after all, I think the second 8 still indicates heavy weapons, as 5 seems to donate stealth in most situations (there's XV15 stealth Firewarriors, XV25 Stealth Suits, Xv95 Ghostkeels)

All situations, in fact. The correct designation of the Crisis Commander variant suit is XV8-05, they just messed up and wrote it as XV85 on the box for the new kit. Probably someone who didn't know why the - and 0 were there.

The numbers after dashes seem to indicate variant marks of an established suit, such as the forge world XV88-02, functionally the same suit but supposedly a next gen variant.

My broadsides are from ebay with the old metal conversion parts (SMS arms, railguns that weigh more than the entire crisis suits, bigger feet, and the thruster covers). I got some of the missile launcher bits from Paulson Games to mount on the shoulders for my HYMP. While holding the rail rifle looks cool, the HYMPs i think look silly being mounted on the arms instead of the shoulders/back (which is typically where missle launchers are mounted on mechs). I also modeled mine on top of a layer of cork board 1/8" thick to give them a bit more height so people don't accuse me of MFA.

Besides I just roll with it in my army's fluff to use the older broadside design as they are on the frontier and have limited access to the newer tech. My earth caste engineers had to improvise a design for HYMP after receiving the technical specs for the weapon but not the blueprints to replicate them.

I was actually thinking of Shadowsun's XV22, which I believe is a modification of the stealth XV25 right?

Go for it. I greatly prefer the over-the-shoulder loom of the oldschool broadside.

Maybe try to fit it on the larger base though.

I love this, it's like a mini Stormsurge without the "I really need a dump" squatting pose. Honestly, I think the Broadsides should have looked like this, or at least like old armour FW Heavy Weapons Squads that have the single shoulder pose.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Loads of people used to convert their original Broadsides to have the guns on the arms and the missile pods on the shoulders.

I don't have any problem with it.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

No way I'd go out to buy £180 worth of new broadsides when I already own half a dozen of the old ones. Rail guns were swapped out for Paulson Games missile pods and away they go. Still on their original 40mm bases from back in 2004-2006.

Everything from the pelvis up (with the obvious exception of the broadside weapons) is made from the new crisis kit. The ability to flip the jetpack parts gives you a huge flat surface to mount the guns on.
