I'm curious if we have data on what factions are the most popular in 40k armies. I was considering painting some stuff up to sell just to practice my painting and wanted to figure out what colour schemes would be the most successful. I'm guessing we have a good idea but since I'm not a 40k player I don't know the exact popularities and wanted to ask.

I think that there is nothing like most popular fraction... but if you will sell it then Tau or something Eldar.

"Faith is the soul of any army; be it vested in primitive religion or enlightened truth. It makes even the least soldier mighty, the craven is remade worthy and through its balm any hardship may be endured. Faith ennobles all of the worlds the soldier undertakes be they so base or vile, and imports to them the golden spark of transcendent purpose."

Most armies don't have many factions. The most popular ones are probably the one's GW use for their display models.

So Ultramarines Chapter, T'au Sept, Goffs, Kabal of the Black Heart, Hive Fleet Leviathan, Mars Forge World, etc.

Farsight will always be more popular than standard yellow tau. Also yellow/brown tau isn't even a faction, it's camo used on taros. Idk if anyone actually runs any sept/faction of tau that isn't farsight.

Deathskull orks are the most successful because the lucky blue paint influences the dice rolls in their favor.

Maybe Farsight Enclaves is. And you're right there is no official sept colour's but that is the colour scheme which has always been associated with T'au sept. Also it's not for Taros/T'ros sept, it originated on T'au to match the plains where the Fire Caste came from. It's also the dress uniform for the entire Fire Caste according to the new Codex.

I'd say go for whatever is having the newest releases, since people will hurry to get whatever new toys GW throws out.

The simplest is Eldar aspect warriors, their colors are based on Shrines, rather than craft worlds, so a paint job can fit in any army. And differing shrines have small differances, so it doesn't get too boring....
