So, A couple of friends are intrested in trying out Malifaux, so I decided to go along with them and try it too! We will probably order a crew box each in about a month or so and I think I narrowed it down to 4 crew boxes I'm chosing between.. But since I know nothing about the game I'd like some help picking crew box to start with. I'm chosing between The Torch and the Blade - Sonnia Criid Crew, The Latigo Posse - Perdita Ortega Crew, The Thunder - Misaki Crew and Of Metal and Flesh - C.Hoffman Crew.

Three of your finalists are in the same faction, so I'd just throw out Misaki straight away. Of the remainders, you want either Perdita or Sonnia for starters, because Hoffman has all kinds of weird stuff going on and he's better as a 2nd or 3rd purchase. So, Sonnia or Perdita are good choices, and not much separates them; I guess I'd choose Pedita because you'll get Francisco, and they are maybe a little more straightforward. Neither is a bad choice, though.

The Latigos are the most straightforward and the largest points force- I'd recommend them.

Thanks for the replies ^_^ I'm currently trying to learn more about the game by watching Battle Reports on youtube, It seems fun ^_^

And on your recomendations, I think I'l go with The Latigo Posse - Perdita Ortega Crew ^_^

Just wanna add, I just saw Closing Time - Brewmaster Crew and it looks funny.. Drunk ninja goblins.. xD Awesome!

Question! After looking arround some more, If I add Bound by Law - Lucius Crew and Dark Debts - Jakob Lynch Crew to the earlier list, What box do you recomend starting with then?

Lynch and Lucius have a lot of overlaps (they both like mimics, which a lot of Lynch's pieces are, outside of the core, and lucius likes minions, and Lynch comes with strong minion options).

I would highly recommend not playing Lucius first- he's very difficult to learn (because he's very resource-intensive in game), not particularly good, requires a lot of pieces, and his boxed set isn't very well constructed. He really taught me how to play efficiently, and I like playing him, but could see him being extremely frustrating to learn the game with.

Lynch is a good option since he's strong and gets even better with condition effects. Only downside is his lieutenant is free, so you're talking about a very cheap (points) starter. Think Perdita's still probably a better choice, though...

You initially said Misaki and like Lynch I'd recommend those and go 10T. Misaki is great for learning and effective. The illuminated are great with her too. Then work on Lynch for something that plays different.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I am very biased when I say start with Perdita. She is byfar my favorite master to play right now, and I have Lady J, Seamus, Ophelia, Colette, Lilith, Pandora and the Viktorias.

It does, because it is very similar. It's a shooting crew with some very powerful shooting models. It's got no minions, which I find to be a weakness of the starter, but it's nothing a box of Bayou Gremlins won't fix.

If you're starting Gremlins, So'mer and Ophelia are a great combination. So'mer gives you Bayou Gremlins, which are a staple of any Gremlin list, and Lenny, a fantastic Henchman. Ophelia gives you some powerful unique Gremlins. Ophelia also gives you Young Lacroix which, despite having some really, really wonky scaling are also great proxys for Bayou Gremlins. If you can scrounge 3 more unit cards for them, you'll have 7 Bayous for when you play So'mer for his summoning, which is a good number.

I really, really don't recommend the Brewmaster as a starting crew. He's a control master, which takes some time to get the hang of. He's less flexible with schemes. He's also super anti-fun for your opponent, since if you manage to get going with him, your opponent doesn't get to do much but watch his guys drink themselves to death. If your opponent is new as well, one of you will walk away from the game extremely discouraged depending on if you get him working or not.

Sorry for flipflipping so much but I'v been reading and looking and trying to decide, And.. I think I realy like Gremlins and Ten Thunders. I'v looked at their avalable models and both seem cool. Though, After reading this comment about Gremlins "Take one part orks, one part Deliverance, and one part drunken game dev, and you've got the Gremlins." They just sound like fun.

My two friends who I'm gonna try Malifaux with are considering getting Herald of Obliteration - Tara Crew and Hired Guns - Von Schill Crew. We will just get a crew box each just to try the game.

Oh! Important question, Can you use a regular deck of playing cards or do you need a special deck of cards for Malifaux?

For what it's worth, gremlins are the only comedy faction I've played that feels intelligent and not just random (it's super-random, but you can control the chaos).

You can use regular decks as long as you have the jokers and a way of telling them apart.

And.. I just spotted another crew box I love the looks of.. Arg.. It is so hard to chose.. All the models look way too awesome. .xD

The Thunder - Misaki Crew, The Kin - Ophelia Crew and Master of Puppets - Collodi Crew all three seem realy awesome.. The more I try to decide on one box, The more I start flipping arround and wanting others.. I just cant nail down what one to get.. If it isent too much trobule (Realy sorry for all of this flip flopping) Could someone give me some info on these three boxes and their playstyles?

Misaki has very little synergy. Good at killing, not very flexible.

Ophelia is the gremlin version of the ortegas- lots of expert gunslingers (gremlins will just hurt themselves and others more).

Collodi likes minions (generally little guys) and not doing the heavy lifting himself.

Hmm... I'm leaning towards Ophelia and Collodi.. Ophelia is Gremlins and they are just cool overall, But Collodi and his crew box seem realy cool too.. Evil killer puppets..

If money's a factor, collodi has a lot of cheap characters from many factions, so he'll end up being on the pricey side to get his whole theme.

I'l probably get a bunch of crews and extra stuff if we keep playing, But for now I'm just trying to chose a crew to try the game with. We are 3 people who will buy 1 crew box each and then try the game out together to see if we like it.

I started this game as a side game to Infinity, which I'm pretty balls deep in. Malifaux was going to be my 'buy a few things, paint them, buy a few more' game, going with only Neverborn.

I now have 3 Neverborn crews (Lilith and a bunch of Nephilim, nearly all painted, Pandora and a few additions about half painted, The Dreamer which I'm starting to expand, none painted)

I then got the Nightmare Whiskey Golem because it was badass. Now I have Gremlin crews (So'mer which I've started painting, and Brewmaster) with my eye on Ophelia and Mah Tucket.

Then I also have inroads into Arcanists since I have the Dark Carnival set (Nightmare Collette) and a Nightmare Coryphee (I really hope these are available during Easter in some way as I really wanted two but could only afford one).

I've been eyeing Ressers for a while because I really like Seamus' crew. While he's a pretty anti-fun master, I really want to grab Hamelin and the Brotherhood of the Rat story encounter. The only factions I really have no interest in are Guild and Ten Thunders.

Wyrd make great models and a great game. It's pretty hard to resist buying 'just one more crew'.

I'm considering getting Ophelia and her crew because it seems easier to play then Collodi, And Gremlins just seem fun. And then if we continue playing i'l expand my gremlins some, Aswell as get Collodi just cus hi crew box looks cool..
