Well, Daemons are definitely still one of the game's top armies...
While Tau can blow the living daylights out of them, Daemons have the cheapness in their Troops and certain specialist units, (Dogs, Seekers mainly), to horde it up and simply overwhelm gunlines with bodies.
We're also the best psychic army in the game hands down, and Tau have 0 defenses in that regard. Between access to the likes of Telepathy, Divination, Malefic and the newly expanded God lores, there's plenty of amazing augments/hexes & a few damage dealing spells to sling about.
We've also received some nice toys in the new CotW expansion, from new Hellforged Artifact lists and Warlord Traits for each God, (and expanded psychic lores), to the Daemonic Incrusion detachment which has a few possible ways to go.
The only thing we're really lacking in is our allies pool, as you either need access to IA:13 and a Forgeworld friendly group, or else you're stuck with CSM's who really won't add anything of relevance beyond cheap Cultists, Helturkies, Oblits, min/maxed Bikes, Spawn, Sorcerers and perhaps an AoBF Jugger Lord.
