Are the threads true that the reconnaissance squad is the worst unit in the game currently? Recently purchased 5 for my Alpha Legion but am not sure if fielding them bare is all I should give, or maybe sink some points, taking full unit strength could give them more of an edge? How does one field them, if at all?

Greetings fellow AL player!
To answer your question, i would say they are best either used as camping snipers or Outflanking/Infiltrate+Scout Shotgun ones
If all that fails to convince you, take them as a Mor Deythan squad (as you can 'steal' them with Rewards of Treason) as the prove effective as well

Like everything in 30k they have uses. For my DG, I frequently ran them w/ snipers, cloaks, and voxes and used them as a forward spotting unit. When I ran them with my TS I used them as a smaller unit that is generally ignored, but can still do a lot of damage to a squad (bye bye Apothecary and srgt.)

That helps a lot. I just haven't really seen a decent enough method of use. Would you guys recommend fielding them in full 10 man strength, or keep them at 5?

I think it depends on how you intend to use them/what your local meta plays. if your local area loves PotL spam, then bring larger squad sizes to drown them in numbers (includes all units, BTW). If you want the squad to do a single, specific thing (act as a forward observer) then stick to a minimum squad size.

There is a new Recon Company Rite of War in book 6 that looks interesting.

Good to know, thanks a lot for the advice!

What is this new reconnaissance rite you speak of?

I figure that they really fit the Alpha Legion fluff wise, so I really wanted to implement them in my list.

This is from the 1d4chan 30k tactics page:
Legion Recon Company: Legion recon squads become compulsory troops and you can re-roll first turn and seize the initiative, however any heavy support units must start in reserve, you must have an additional troop which must be a recon squad and no termies allowed. Anything that scouts or infiltrates gets shrouded for a turn, which works very well with Legions like Raven Guard (infantry get infiltrate, and ICs can buy camo for a 4+ in the open), Alpha Legion (everything with LA can get infiltrate or scout or both), and Night Lords (Terror Squads can infiltrate, all NLs start the game in 5+ pseudo-cover which stacks with shrouded, so they are in 3+ even out in the open).

Give them a nuncio vox and let them spot for medusas and basilisks

Wow that's odd. So one must field 3 reconnaissance squads at the least and no terminators ? Seems like it could be fun.

Nah, you NEED 3 compulsory troops, and only 1 of those MUST be recon marines. so you COULD go tac, tac, recon, though that would be almost missing the point

Use them to attach a Master of Signal to

I like the idea of not having to use 3 scout units a bit better. Seems a bit much considering... I'll still field 2 units though. I like the idea of adding master of signal. Maybe I can finally field Exodus??

Yeah

Exodus
(Additional HQ choice here as Exodus cant be your compulsory)

6x Recon Squads
3x Headhunter Kill Teams
3x Heavy support squads with Lascannons

May consider a Master of Signal for Cognis Signum (+1 BS). Possibly overkill though.

They can help a lot for precision DS; Take a Vox, infiltrate forward, drop some stuff without scatter. I personally love doing it with perturabo.

That's ONE way of looking at it, others say you need 3 squads, best to check with your club/opponent/to just to make sure which way they will play it.

Isn't that how it's worded in the book? Honestly I'm not 100% sure, I'm just going on the wording I've read online.
