Flower Picking Eldar Youth

Hey Everyone, I'm a very new player to 40K and haven't even played a game yet but really enjoy putting together the models I thought were cool and so I would greatly appreciate some knowledge from veteran players whether it be about my list, tips on playing Eldar or against Eldar, or information about the game in general.

Without further ado here is my (most likely awful) list.

I think you may have an older codex. Wraithknights are 295 in the new dex (and a bargain at that!). Wave serpents aren't what they once were, but a lot of people still use them for Wraithguard. Good start will be the newest Eldar book.

Yep, as Kholzerino said you've got the previous codex. Exarchs no longer have purchasable special rules, Runes of Warding aren't purchasable anymore, and there have been some points/rules changes.

in general though:
- Leave your Dire Avengers as 5 man squads, or take full 10 mans with an Exarch. The Exarch is expensive for what he gives you, so if you're going to take one then try to max the squad out to get the most out of his benefits.
- Jetbikes with Scatter lasers are one of - if not the - best troops choice in the entire game. In the new codex every jetbike can take a shuriken cannon or scatter laser, and they're very useful for grabbing objectives. Dire Avengers in Wave serpents are still good though, just giving you the options.
- Wraithguard need a Wave Serpent for sure. Walking any squad of them is basically suicide. In the new dex they can get strength D templates weapons, which is the most common loadout for them by far.
- War Walkers should never be taken stock. in the new codex you can give them scatter lasers for free. Either 2x Scatter Lasers or 2X bright lances is the most common loadout for them. But they are definitely still good.
- Missile Launchers are very expensive for what they give you. They're fine if you've got extra points and are looking for somewhere to spend them, but in general Eldar have such a high volume of decent strength shooting that you don't need missile launchers. Plus you already have a Crimson Hunter for anti-air.

What?

For 10 points, you get a model with the following upgrades over a regular aspect warrior.
+1 WS
+1 BS
+1 Wound
+1 Init
+1 Attack
And on top of that he/she gets a 4+ invlun save, allowing you to tank large hits like a PG. Just this past weekend I had one sit in a challenge with a CSM librarian for 3 rounds before dying.
That 10 point upgrade gets you a character upgrade equivalent to a chaplain in another codex! C:SM sergeants cry themselves to sleep at night when they see what the exarch gets.
That said, generally keep your exarch's bare bones. Dont buy a lot of bling for them..

Edit : Everything else you said Bojazz was money. Great advice!

Firstly, welcome to the hobby! 40k is a lot of fun, be it modeling of playing.

As others have mentioned, you are using the old codex. The next question is .. have you bought those models yet, or are you looking at what to buy? That makes a big difference as to what is recommended.

I totally agree that the 10 points is a great price for what you get with an Exarch. What I was trying to say is that it's 10 extra points that will get wiped out pretty easily in a 5 man unit. Especially if you've got him out front tanking shots. The best use for an Avenger Exarch isn't to tank hits at the front of the squad, it's to buff the unit from the back either with a shimmershield (which is even more effective in a 10 man unit) or with the dire sword, using the forward avengers as extra wounds until he can get into combat.

With just a 5 man squad that same 10 points plus wargear is much better spent getting you heavy weapons or more bodies elsewhere in the list.

I worded it very poorly though. It sounded like I was saying the Exarch upgrades aren't worth 10 points, which as you pointed out is definitely not true.

Thanks for alerting me, I had no clue a new codex came out. And as for all the models I currently own here's my list.

(The numbers are based on how many boxes I have rather than how many units I have within a box. So x1 Dire Avenger is 1 box of 5 Dire Avengers.)
x1 Wraithknight
x1 Crimson Hunter
x1 Eldar Battleforce
x1 Wraithguard
x2 War Walker
x1 Farseer
x1 Eldrad
x2 Dire Avenger
x1 Eldar Guardian Squad

I also own a few of the Harlequin models but I don't know if they count as Eldar anymore so I'm leaving them seperated here:
x1 Harlequin Troupe
x1 Death Jester
x1 Shadowseer
x1 Skyweaver (box of 2)

P.S.: I am currently living in Germany at the moment and so I can't easily buy a copy of the Newest codex until I move back to the states or order it online, both being a lengthy process.

The new eldar book has 'Craftworlds' on the front of it, just for future reference and so you can get the right one. You have the start of a very solid army boss! The eldar battleforce means you have 10 guardians, 5 more dire avengers, a vyper and a wave serpent ready to go there too! Wraithguard a solid, as are wraithknights (arguably the best GC in the game right now for the points). With 2 guardian units and modeling up a unit of 10 dire avengers you have a very solid core of troops. Until you can get some jetbikes (arguably the best troops in the game when equipped with scatter lasers). With what you have you could build something like this. Kind of Ulthwe-like. I don't know what craftworld you had in mind, or if you had thought about it, but Ulthwe is black and bone colored. Very cool and iconic for it psychic powers and use of guardians. Limited aspect warriors, favoring wraith units.

Farseer - singing spear
Eldrad
2 Guardians units w/heavy weapons platforms
10 Dire avengers - Exarch w/power weapon & shimmer shield
Crimson Hunter - Exarch
Vyper - shuriken cannon (stock loadout)
Wraithknight - your choice of ranged or close combat - I run secondary weapons as well, but it's your choice

You could even throw some harlequins as an allied detachment (they have their own codex now) to make the points go farther. With the shadowseer you have more psychic dice as well. Good stuff.

Hope that helps! Good luck and welcome and awesome codex. Ignore the hate, people will think you're cheesy just for playing eldar. Ignore it. Cheers!
