The time has come for me to find a better method for transporting my Necrons. After lots of research, I've narrowed it down to KR or Battle Foam. In either case, I will be purchasing a mixture of pre-made inserts and custom. Obviously, Battle Foam is more expensive. Now, I was always raised to believe the adage "You get what you pay for", so I don't immediately say "KR is cheaper. buy KR", but I was also raised to believe that a fool and his money are soon parted, so neither do I say "Battle Foam is more expensive. It must be better". I guess the real question I would like to ask to those who own one or both brands of army case is this:

Is Battle Foam worth the higher price?

Different rather than better or worse.

The stiff foam that BF uses is better for metal minis but the soft conforming foam that KR uses let's you go with a smaller cell size that's much more accepting of protruding details.

BF cases are great but the combination of KR card cases and soft cases that hold card cases for transport makes for a more versatile system.

(Full disclosure: I don’t own any battlefoam, just KR)

Some advantages battlefoam are the full customization and sizes. IIRC they will custom cut to your exact specs. Also, because they are not restricted to the KRU size, they can do deeper trays. For example, the Monolith is a tray 4/3 of a KRU high, so only works in certain cases. If you play with drop pods, battlefoam has a very nice tray that holds some crazy amount of them (I think 8-10, I saw it once and was impressed) while KR you can get 4 into a KRU.

I’ve heard that the firmer foam works better for spiky armies, less snagging.

With KRs soft foam, you get more flex in your slots. If a mini is a little big, it can hang out or push the walls a bit without worry. And while you might not get the full customization of battlefoam, they do offer a wide range of trays. As I switch my lists around a lot, the modularity of the system is also a major perk.

IMHO battlefoam is a good product. It however does not offer anything I can’t get from KR, at a lower price. So why pay for something I don’t need?

Thank you for the replies. A follow up question would be which would you consider easier to expand? When I eventually start getting more models, which system do you see as being easier to add to once I've increased those numbers in my signature to 3000 and 3000?

Should be reasonably easy to do either. Just a mater of picking up new trays. KR is very easy to expand, just grab more cardboard cases to slot into your bag, and/or swap trays around inside the boxes. I started with a Kaiser 3 plus one extra KRU of infantry trays. When they released their new 1.5 high boxes I took advantage of the BOGO sale to pick up a few more trays for my SM and enough foam to hold my Eldar.

But my understanding of battlefoam bags is they hold a certain amount of inches of foam, so you should be able to get extra and swap as needed as well.

Do you intend to store you minis in the foam? In which case I think the KR system might be better, as everything is in a box. Not that the BF stuff is bad, but open, firm trays is not quite as nice a storage solution. IMHO, etc.

I'm thinking I will be storing them in the foam

I've owned a battlefoam case for quite some time, and a note on expand-ability: If you get they're 720 model case (and ones of the same footprint), a lot of their cases will zip together with an addon case. This is nice as it allows you to bring as big or small an army case as you need to events. Their stuff is pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Checked my battlefoam bag on an airplane recently and everything got to the event without a scratch.

If you want to expand by just buying trays then the more sturdy BF trays definitely have the advantage.

If you don't like the idea of loose trays laying around (very difficult to pull one tray out of a large stack) then KR's card cases make expanding much cheaper than buying more BF cases.

I've got about 30 card cases now and I only have three of the padded cases (one each of 2, 3 & 4) -I just grab the card cases I need and shove them in a suitable padded case.

If your army is an ongoing, expanding project then KR is definitely the way to go because you can add storage in fairly small inexpensive increments ( which also means you don't have to plan too far ahead).

If you design an army of xx points, build and paint it then move onto something else then BF is perfect because you can get fully custom foam (including markings.to remind you which squad goes where) in a really nice case with codex, etc packed in there as well. You just grab a case and your rulebook and you're set.
