Hi guys, i used tamiya paint retarder with some of my old gw paint and it worked nicely. When mixing it last night with the new abadon black the paint becomes "cloggy" and grainy, first i thought it was the paper i used for my wet pallet, and then thought it was my paint itself that was "grainy" anybody knows what the deal is here?

I'm amazed that you've managed to use their thinner with any paint other than Tamiya! Yup,you've got a bad chemical reaction happening. You'd be better off getting yourself a bottle of Humbrol Acrylic thinners as it works well with GW,Vallejo and others.Tamiya stuff is primarily meant for Tamiya stuff.

You saved me a lot of hassle in bringing this up. I was eyeing out that exact same one as I know of a few guys using Tamiya paints. Now I know there is a chance of chemical reaction I'll do a bit more research into the matter.

I'll see if I can get a hold of this one. If not I'll try find as close a match as possible. If I eventually manage to get one I'll post my findings in the forums sometime.

Are you guys talking about the Tamiya Acrylic Thinner X-20A? I thought any acrylic thinner would work fine with any acrylic paint, no matter the brand. Isn't it the same thing?

Tamiya acrylics and Gunze acrylics use similar bases for their paints. For the most part Tamiya and Gunze paints are intermixable and Gunze thinners and retarders work well with Tamiya paints and vice versa. They're heavily alcohol based, but in addition to alcohol they have a bunch of other stuff in them.

Vallejo, GW, P3, Army painter, Reaper. Those are mostly water based acrylics. They all use slightly different formulations of binders and some mix together better than others, but for the most part all the water based acrylics are intermixable. Some of them do have a bit of alcohol in them too just to make things more confusing (metallics often have a more alcohol-ish smell to them), but typically far less than Tamiya and Gunze.

Mixing products designed for alcohol based products with water based products, sometimes you get lucky and it works (like apparently the older GW paints as you found) but often it just creates a rubbery claggy mess. But it is confusing, because some of the water based acrylics do have some amount of alcohol in them.

It's hard to know without just experimenting, but people will typically say to avoid using Tamiya products with GW/Vallejo/P3/Reaper/Army Painter. Even within that bunch sometimes stuff doesn't mix brilliantly, if you're noticing it's harder to paint with a certain mix it sometimes means the binders aren't completely compatible.
