I just found out that the local store near Baltimore Maryland (http://titangamesandhobbies.com) is holding an event this month, Adepticon rules:

http://www.adepticon.org/wpfiles/2016/2016waoschamp.pdf

Short version: 1800 points SDK (max 4 heroes, monster heroes count for two; max 2 monsters, 3 war machines, min 7 units), plus a 750 point side pool for summoning (max 1 spell per turn, summoned units that are killed can be re-summoned in later turns)

I've got about three weeks to decide on a list and get it at least minimally painted. I'll be playing Grand Alliance of Death, Here's a first draft list:

Main army:
  • Wight King with Black Axe (commander)
  • Arkhan the Black
  • Necromancer
  • 1 Morghast Archai
  • 14 Grave Guard with shields and command
  • 30 Skeletons with spears and command
  • Mortis Engine
  • Necrosphynx

  • Summoning Pool
  • 2 Morghast Harbingers
  • 6 Spirit Hosts
  • 20 Skeletal Archers with command

  • Alternative main list: http://bit.ly/1LEkQQt
    Alt. summoning pool: http://bit.ly/1LEkf1g

Am I better off with the stronger necrosphynx deployed as in the main list, or with the resummonable terrorgheist as in the alt list? (at the moment I'm working with the assumption that the limit of one monster in the summoning pool counts towards the limit of two monsters in the overall list).

Any other suggestions? I need to decide on the list pretty much by the end of this weekend so I can have any hope of getting it to minimum painting standards by the 26th.

A lot of your choice may depend on what scenarios they will have for the event. Our group has tried the primer mission and comp for Adepticon, its ok and all that but if that's the kind of missions you will be playing, then you may end up with some of your hard hitting units being stuck on an objective so you can score if for a turn as opposed to getting needed face time elsewere.

Also resummoning monster like Terrorghiests is neat and all but really,by the time he goes down the first time the game is usually decided or nearing its end and the resummons wont have much impact.I personally like to use summoning to put chaff in players faces, stuff like Spirit hosts,Zombies and Skellies.Though those Morghasts are a nice punch unit to pop up front

Well obviously I don't know which units you have available but if I were you I'd try to run the new formation for Neferata (you already have most of what's in it in your list). It's really, really strong, even with the summoning limitations. Then in front of it do add the Wight King with Black Axe and a ton of skeletons.

Unfortunately, no formations are allowed in the Adepticon rules, otherwise I'd be running the Spirits of Fellwood at a minimum.

I did brifly flirt with running Nagash plus the Necrosphynx, with a summoning pool mostly consisting of 4 morghast archai... But I don't want to be 'that guy', especially when the local scene is really small and kind of fragile. So if taking a slightly less powerful army means giving anyone who tries the game a slightly better experience at the cost of losing a few games, I'm cool with that.

Anyway, here's the updated, current, and probably final version of the list:

    Main List
    - Arkhan the Black
    - Wight King with Black Axe (commander)
    - Necromancer
    - 1 Morghast Archai
    - 10 Black Knights with full command
    - 20 Grave Guard with shields and full command
    - 30 Skeleton Warriors with spears and full command
    - Mortis Engine
Total: 1793 out of 1800 SDK

    Summoning Pool
    - 6 Spirit Hosts
    - 3 Bat Swarms
    - Terrorgheist
Total: 748 out of 750 SDK

May not be as strong as before, I don't know, but it has a couple advantages on the prior versions:

    - Only uses units from the Grand Alliance: Death book, so I'll be operating out of a single source for my army rules.

    - The main list looks more like an army, what with the 50 infantry and 10 cavalry. These are the first models I'll have painted for my undead since I sold off my old army a year or so ago, so it would be nice to have something that feels like an actual army finished when I'm done.

    - I'll only have to buy the bat swarms, which will save me money compared to the corpse cart I would have had to buy for the old alternate list (the store lets us play whatever models, so i can get the cheap reaper bones swarms - not ideal models, but then again neither are GW's for this unit).

The primary downside is that I have to paint my Terrorgheist, which I expect to be a much harder process than painting the necrosphynx would have been, since I have already glued it to its large rectangular base, so reaching all of its nooks and crannies to paint it will be a major pain. Partly for that reason, I'm considering re-basing it, but I put a fair bit of work into making a place on the base that my ghoul king can stand, so... I don't know.

I can worry about that later, though, as I've got a lot of other stuff to paint first.

I'd swap the Mortis Engine for more Archai I think.

Tactically, yeah, I agree, especially since I know for a fact there will be another undead player there, and the scene is small enough at the moment that I'll almost certainly end up playing against them, but...

The mortis engine is non-negotiable. It's my favorite model, I've had it lying around waiting to be painted for ages, and this is my excuse to get it done.

I'm actually very happy with the current list. It has a bunch of my favorite models, it has enough units of sufficient size that I'll really feel like I have a painted army when I'm done, while still looking like I might just barely be able to finish in time (though it'll be cutting it close if I do).

Are those adepticon rules nice start to competitive AoS game? Im thinking to start Age of sigmar because its easy to do, but im not only a casual gamer, I love to go to tournaments and events, but on AoS, its not easy to find tournaments, at least here in Spain

Quick question - which column for points did they use at adepticon? The cost column or the PVS column?

I'm not prejudiced, I hate everyone equally
