The Imperial Fist's RoW gives a +1 toughness for having at least 3 models in coherency armed with shields. However I have two situations where I am not sure if I will get the bonus.

1. Within a transport. Say 10 Breachers are in a land raider variant, and it explodes. What toughness do the marines have? Technically the marines are in coherency inside the transport, but at the same time the actual models are not on the table so they can't be in coherency.

2. Challenges. Say 4 terminators and a sergeant are in close combat. The sergeant issues a challenge, does he benefit from the toughness bonus? It's a "1v1" fight, so fluff-wise I would say no, but it's technically in coherency.

Thoughts?

1: they are no OUT of coherency so I'd say yes

2: yep he'd be T5 as long as he is in coherency.

No on the first one. The models aren't out of coherency, sure, but they aren't in coherency either, because they aren't even on the table. If you can't even measure coherency then I don't think you could possibly get to claim the rule (and fluffwise it makes sense, they aren't making a shield wall, an explosion is happening all around them while they're in a transport).

Yes on the second one - sarge is still part of the unit, and he's in coherency, so he still gets the bonus. Fluff wise you can say his marines are protecting his flanks during the challenge
