Part of me wants to bring 7 ethereal a to an apoc game mainly because it would be an excuse to bring my collection of all the unique ethereal models that were put out (not counting the named guys). That being said, I do realize they'd be one str 10 ap 1 blast away from giving the opponents 7 victory points, and I feel like it would be a cheeky way to feth my team over.

Why on earth would you deploy that kind of force multiplier in a single block?

Formation that lets you bring 3-7 ethereal with each ethereal after the 3rd being redundent. They need to stick together as one unit to get the special effects of the formation.

But you can bring two formations composed of 3 ethereals and 1 ethereal alone.
Less risky.
No ?

This I could but it would still be equally redundent in the number of ethereals.

7 ethereals just sounds way too risky in my opinion. Even if you have them spread out that'd be so many free points for a team to take. Even if you don't lose them all to apoc blasts there's so much else that could kill them quite easily. I'd say 3 or 4 tops and even then that's a lot of victory points I could score.

If I'm playing an apoc game, even though I'm a normally casual player, I want our team to be at least pretty good if I'm going to be investing so much time in it. Giving my opponent the potential to get 7 victory points by taking out some naked guys? I mean, I'd let you bring it for sure, but I might be a little unhappy unless you really make those 7 points count. I can just think of so many ways they'd get wiped out in an apoc game that my army alone can do, let alone all the other options.

EDIT: I really hate to sound like I did, I really don't want to seem mean, I just know that there are people out there that take 40k a lot more seriously than I do who would almost certainly be annoyed.

This sounds like a terrible idea purely because of the cheap victory points it offers. You'd need much less than a Str10 AP1 blast to knock them all out.

Ethereals are best when they're individually attached to squads or don't set foot out of their devilfish.

How many points are you playing?
Being as apocalypse can be 2k upwards It makes a huge difference.
They'd barely make a dent in a 100,000k game.

100,000k? So 100 million points? Sounds a bit too big for my tastes

I can safely say no, neither I or anyone with any lick of sense would 'give you a dirty look' for running that formation.

At any points level.

With any army.

I would only give you a nasty look if you where in my team, and you could not convince me that you are going to pull of some sort of nasty trick with them that actually works.
No idea why you would ever want to do that. But it sure seems like a squishy and terribad. Are you planning to place them in a fortification or behind void shields because they just seem like the most ideal target for a nice alfa strike or some random barrage trolling.

The question: hey teammate do you mind if I take an expensive t3 footslogging unit that gives them 7 victory isn't something I like to hear before an appoc game : P

It's an Apoc game, do what you like.... but I wouldn't know why you'd take that. It seems VERY easy to take out for the points investiture.

I'd happily support some kind of "protect the ethereals" custom objective. Wanting to bring all seven variant models is a noble endeavour so coming up with something that makes it interesting for everyone would be satisfying.

I would give you an odd look for bringing that many potential free VP's to the table, since Ethereals are super squishy, but I think it'd be cool to have an objective to protect all of them or something like that

I like this idea. Make it fluffy.

Also, why are you playing an apoc game with kill points? My group always plays objective based missions for our apoc games. It just makes things more interesting and there's less bookkeeping.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but apocalypse uses strategic assets as points, not regular points, so technically the ethereals would only be worth the single point for a destroyed formation, unless there is another rule under the formation that changes this.

Either way, I didn't realize people really cared about winning apocalypse games. To me they've always just been super casual slugfests that are really more about the carnage and making heroes out of regular troopers than victory. The sheer presence of Titans and D weapons just makes the game so rediculous let unbalanced that winning seems a little pointless to me.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

WHFB Armies:
Lizardmen 1000 points

It's not kill points. Ethereals always give 1 vp upon death in any game mode.

We could make it email / vassal game.
I am up for it as long as we use some kind of script to automate all the dice rolls.

Hardened Veteran Guardsman

No idea what the formation does but in my apoc experience, anything that's not a LOW (or can seriously hurt one) is just there to get shot.

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.

Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.

And he will hold the line.

One day, all Dakkanauts should unite and have some kind of big convention to do just that. With that many players, we might even get finished within a year
