is there a game similar in size to 40k out there?
I know that mantic has their game coming and am familiar with infinity but are there any other sci fi games out there that could work mechanically as a 40k alternative?

I was just wondering if there was anything with less clutter that I could use my 40k figures and terrain with.

Well, I'd suggest Warmachine/Hordes.
The rule set is much tighter than that of 40k with no gaps and loop holes. They also have a tournament setting named Steamroller. Have a look at battlecollege.org for armies, units and models.
