I was thinking of a low and a high setting for plasma guns like high being more powerful but getting hot on a 4+ and low not as powerful but can't get hot and please tell me your recommendations or why you think this wouldn't work

I think you should propose something slightly more detailed, like perhaps weapon profiles for both firing modes for each type of plasma weapon?

As it is now I'm not entirely sure I could comment much because there's not much to comment on.

I think giving plasma two firing modes could be done appropriately. But there's different weapons that shoot plasma, so propose more stuff so we have an idea of what you personally might want to implement.

I'm not quite sure about the stats yet what do you think would be good and the plasma what I meant was like the the Imperial plasma

I would say no because:

1.) Imperium weapons generally don't have this sort of switch, as thematically they're suppose to be both hightech and regressed at the same time, showing through how their technology are clearly way out there, but also lacks basic refinement. Basically, you wouldn't expect the imperium to use the sensible solution because they always have more bodies.

2.) The one race that would do this would probably be the Tau, but it's redundant for them because they already figured out a plasma rifle that has marginally less damage, but far safer operation.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Maybe it could be an upgrade I just remember a rule like this from Necromunda so I would say they can do it

Krieg! What a hole...

Plasma gun could go to STR 5 AP 3 or something without gets hot.

Lasguns, hellguns and plasma guns all have variable settings.

I think I remember something from one of the BA omnibuses where plasma guns had various settings for the "intensity" of the plasma bolt. Maybe something like what bob said? Trade a few points of strength for no gets hot?

Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

For that I don't know. Too high of a strength and it starts treading on heavier weapons toes, maybe it can fire more shots, but it gets hot on 1's and 2's?

This used to be the case in Necromunda. You could fire on a regular setting or overcharge which meant you couldn't fire next turn but the shot was much more powerful.

Maybe like this:

Safe setting: R24 S4 AP2 Rapid-fire
Normal setting: R24 S7 AP2 Rapid-fire, Gets Hot
Overcharge: R24 S9 AP2 Salvo 1/1, Superheat

Superheat: A weapon with this special rule has Gets Hot, but on any failed to-hit roll. Additionally, the firing model cannot fire this weapon in its next Shooting Phase (or at any time before, including Interceptor or Overwatch). The model may still fire any other weapons it is legally able to use (such as a bolt pistol or krak grenades).

Back in RT/2nd you couldn’t fire plasma every round for the most part. In 2nd, if you shot a plasma gun/pistol, you could not fire it in the next round. There was no Gets Hot! rule though, so it was safer to use them. Heavy plasma guns did have 2 settings. The “low” power one could be used every turn (which was comparable to the normal plasma gun, but d4 wounds, better armor pen vs. vehicles and small blast, rather then sustained fire) This was the only way plasma could be fired every round. It also had the max power setting, which put it back to every other turn, but was S10 rather then 7, with more wounds done etc.
