I remember watching the footage on YouTube, like a huge disaster movie, and being greatly shocked and astonished.

I've been really amazed by so many stories of how well the cleanup and recovery has gone. Before and after images of destroyed streets all cleaned up.
Crazy to think it's been 5 years now.

The Japanese are very good at organising that kind of thing. They really like to spend money on infrastructure.

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.

It seem just like it was yesterday that this happened.

The "Ring of Fire" is like a gigantic, ticking time bomb. When the worst happens, all you can do is ride it out, pick yourself up afterwards, dust off, and rebuild. Doesn't make losing someone in a disaster any easier, though.

Related to the tsunami but overall just kind of an interesting story.

Right after Fukushima they started heavily monitoring children's thyroids as they didn't want another Chernobyl type scenario. They ended up finding cysts or abnormal growths on the thyroids of almost 50% of the children, Obviously shock and horror was in the air.

But it basically turned out that using modern ultrasound techniques used to screen everyone were picking up normal growths that previously would have gone unnoticed. Lots of Japanese kids ended up getting thyroid ablations or removals, which are then stuck on hormone pills for the rest of their lives.

It really is starting to change up how MD's view thyroid problems in general, and that maybe current views are outdated. I love science for things like that.
