Piggybacking off the Land Speeder Loadout thread, what is the best optional weapon for the Land Speeder Storm? Since the LSS is now BS4, is just leaving the Heavy Bolter on there a good option? It has the best range of any of the options, can be fired whenever the Storm Jinks, and is the only option that actually comes with the kit! The Heavy Flamer is the next option, which came into vogue when there was a difference in Ballistic Skill between Scouts and other Space Marines. It is a template, so it can't be used with Jink which sucks. But it also auto-hits, so that is nice. Also free is a nice price. The Multi-Melta is nice, but isn't cheap and best works in pairs when it comes to Speeders, which the Storm can't do. It can still fire if you jink, but it isn't going to hit anything. And because the Speeder is AV10 with Open-Topped, you are probably going to get to shoot it...once before it blows up. The last option is the Assault Cannon. It is the most expensive option and doesn't have a lot to show for it. It has rending and the most shots, YAY! But it suffers from the MM's problem of being a lot of points attached to a floating box of aluminum foil.
So basically, it is between the Heavy Bolter and Heavy Flamer. Is there ever a reason to stick with the Heavy Bolter? Or is the Heavy Flamer objectively better?

I always run a heavy flamer. Being in heavy flamer range turn one is huge combined with the blind launcher(that I always freaking forget to fire)

Either Heavy Flamer or Multi-Melta. Other options look attractive due to the nice BS4, but only those two options will give something you're lacking in (especially the Multi-Melta, which is one of your primary anti-Void-Shield weapons).

If you are running it as an assault transport, take the MM (hoping to get a transport opened up), or the HF.
The HF should work well with the blind launcher, ready for the squad to charge out of the back. Just be careful of extending the charge range by too much.

I run them with squads of Bolter Scouts (Imperial Fists tactics). So I never run them as an assault transport, to be honest.

Honestly I think they’ve done a pretty good job balancing the options out on the LSS. A lot depends on what you need more of in your list.
I use the HB, for a number of reasons.
I play WYSWYG, and it comes with the kit.
With the blind launcher, you are shooting at infantry, so I’d like to keep all the storm’s weapons focused on that.
I’m a miser with upgrade points, and the AsC (while mostly reasonable) is more then I feel like investing.
I like the range, so I can pepper things before I commit to an attack run.
It can be fired while jinking. My speeders jink whenever someone looks at them funny.
