Why do some models come with square bases and some come with round bases? Is there a game rules reason for this or is it something else.

I've noticed that GW Fantasy models come with square bases and GW 40K models come with round bases. Does anyone know why?

Fantasy models used to have to deploy in ranks when the game was Warhammer Fantasy Battles rather than Age of Sigmar, thus the need for square/rectangle bases as they line up nicely and fit in movement trays, which was very important for those rules.

Now it's become Age of Sigmar, and the rules completely changed, that's no longer a requirement, and thus models are being released on the (in my opinion much, much better looking) rounds. However, it's taking them a while to repack every kit to have round bases, so you'll see square bases on the older kits for quite some time to come.

Also, is it bad that this post made me feel old? A smaller feeling now, but also the fact that in the future (knowing GWs ability to take forever) we'll have people asking "why do all the Empire Generals come with square bases"
