I've been thinking about this since the Kauyon book came out. Has anyone run, or what do you think about running, a White Scars command squad that's melee focused?

I'm thinking of a captain or chapter master with artificer armor and the glaive of vengeance. The command squad with the banner of the eagle (fleet, furious charge), apothecary, 3 power lances, 2-3 shields, and a powerfist. That's 11 s6 ap3 and 3 s9 power fist attacks on the charge, and then the captain's 5 s8 ap2 at initiative attacks. With formation bonuses they also get 10 HoW attacks with re-rolls to wound.

It isn't the strongest thing out there, and obviously the grav version is overall better. But it just looks kinda mean. They'll always be able to jink and get that good scars save. And I plan on running them in a scar blade strike force. They will be able to get anywhere on the board by turn 2. It's also only around 400 points depending on load out.

Have you run it? Seen it played? What do you think, or how would you run it?

I actually run something similar.

Captain (or Chapter Master, depending on game size) with Glaive of Vengeance, Artificer Armour, Storm Shield.

Command Squad with Champion with Power Lance, Apothecary, 3x Power Lance, 2x Shields, and 1x Meltabombs just for good measure.

I've run this multiple times and it's a power house. I've seen it tank against twice as many points, surviving all sorts of stuff. I remember one game, I made a tactical error and left them open for the charge from a 10-man Raven Guard assault squad with all sorts of lightning claws, joined by Captain Shrike. Not only did everyone survive, they moped up the enemy.

Not sure how this would do in your meta, but in mine (95% play for fun) this is a power house.

Should add some grav anyway if not for the ap 2 gun but for concussive.

I cannot believe in a God who wants to be praised all the time.

Pistols and lances are fluffy, but I think you'd be better off with grav-guns and single lightning claws, especially if you're considering taking storm shields.

Some MathHammer, assuming MEQ (WS 4, T 4, Sv 3+) targets:
A Veteran with a pistol and lance averages 1.333 unsaved wounds on the charge, but this falls to a mere 0.250 wounds thereafter.
A Veteran with a lance and shield gets only 1.000 average wounds, plus a pitiful 0.167 each round afterwards.
A Veteran with a single claw instead yields 1.125 wounds on the charge, plus 0.750 in subsequent combat.
The Champion with a pistol and lance should account for 1.778 wounds when charging, plus 0.333 wounds every round after the first.
The Champion with a pistol and sword hits for for 1.333 wounds when charging, plus 1.000 wounds per round after that.

My conclusion is that lances are great on the charge, but completely fall apart afterwards against heavier armor. Given that you probably don't want to Hit and Run out of combat on your own Assault phase lest you get shot off the board, you'll be stuck with at least one round of terrible melee where you're incredibly vulnerable to counter-attack. Lightning claws or power swords are a little less sexy, but they retain much more of their effectiveness even without the charge bonus, and cost the same amount of points.
