Just so you know, my friend suggested I do this sooo... Here I go.

I'm a new Warhammer 40k player and I came here to introduce myself. And find a starting point for me to get into the hobby.

My name is and I live down here in Australia. I play a lot of card games, video games, and now, I'm looking to get into tabletop/war games.
Now that that's out of the way, since I'm just getting into the Warhammer 40k scene, I was wondering where to start? I've never played the game before, but I have seen my mates play it.
The game looks very big, lots of armies to pick from, so I need help picking something to start with. Just so you know, I have around $150 to start off with.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Hello and welcome!

Got to warn you first off, you've picked an expensive country to play in...

With that out of the way though, you'll need the rulebook, the codex for your army (gives army-specific rules and details, and background), and the army itself.

Ultimately the best advice on what army to choose is to pick the one you like the look of most. You'll be spending a long time modelling and painting your army, so it needs to be something you think is cool. Have a look through the GW website, and see what catches your eye.

It's worth noting that not all armies are equal, and some are considered a lot more powerful than the rest - top of the pile at the moment are Eldar, Tau, Necrons and possibly Space Marines depending on how you play them. Armies that are particularly struggling at the moment are Chaos Marines, Orks, Dark Eldar, and possibly Tyranids.

If you're only playing friendly games with your mates I wouldn't worry about that too much though.

Welcome to Dakka!

The Dark Vengeance set is a good way to get started. It includes to small armies, and a copy of the 40K rulebook. That runs about $165 new retail in the US, but you can find it for less in some places. I can't speak for the cost where you live, but I have heard that GW prices are more expensive in AUS. You mentioned a friend suggested you post here -- do you have any local friends that play 40K, or is there a local game store where you can meet some folks? People who have been playing a while often have extra models they are willing to sell. Hope this helps!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Thanks guys for the replies and advice.
Yeah you guys are right. It's really expensive.

I'm planning to get Space Wolves. They look really nice and have that "start collecting" thingy. Are Space Wolves any good?

Hi. Welcome to Dakka

Space Wolves are decent. With their new campaign book they got some new nasty units and formations, and people already feared the Thunder wolf Cavalry for a very good reason...

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Hi, and Welcome!

Good to see another Australian getting into the hobby! Seems there is another contender trying to win cross lotto to pay for the hobby, so good luck

Space Wolves are a fairly solid army and the starter set is a very good place to start. I would recommend buying the codex before you start assembling them because it will allow you to find out what sort of weapons and other gear your units are allowed to take as well as how much they cost points-wise.

Also, don't worry at all about whether or not the army you pick is good. I play Black Templars and they are one of the least competitive Space Marine armies around. My mate plays Orks, and he's not a very good player nor are Orks particularly competitive either, but he still has heaps of fun. So just go with what sounds cool to you and I guarantee you'll have fun!

Happy Wargamming!
