Argentina's coastguard says it has chased and sunk a Chinese vessel that was fishing illegally in Argentine waters on Monday.
In a statement, the coastguard said one of its vessels had fired warning shots at the Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010 as it headed for international waters.
The coastguard said it had first tried to raise a response by radio. All 32 crew members were rescued, it said.
China has expressed "serious concern" over the sinking.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said in a statement that Beijing "has made urgent representations" to Argentina, demanding a thorough investigation of the incident.
Illegal fishing is a common problem in the region.
"On several occasions, the offending ship performed manoeuvres designed to force a collision with the coast guard, putting at risk not only its own crew but coast guard personnel, who were then ordered to shoot parts of the vessel," the coast guard statement said (in Spanish)
The incident comes despite Argentina's relations with China growing closer in recent years.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

Chinese fishing boats often face off against Japanese naval vessels using ramming manoeuvres, but the Japanese have never got to the point of shooting at them, which legally they would be entitled to do..
It sounds as though the Argentinians are happy to take forthright action.
Well done, Argentina!

Is it normal to sail all the way from China to Argentina to fish?

Not much fish left nearer to China. Stocks have been increasingly depleted since the Chinese moved long distance fishing in the 1980s The Chinese annual catch is massive.

The waters off Argentina are popular fishing grounds.
When I was working in the Falkland Islands I would often fly out on planes loaded with fishing crews from as far away as New Zealand.

If you've signalled a foreign ship within your waters to stand to, and they respond by trying to ram you not once, but several times, and actively try to evade stop and search by official vessels, you are well within your rights to open fire.
Perhaps China should issue instructions to tell it's fishermen to obey the law when in foreign waters.

I predict China will let Argentina get away with this, it will be interesting to see if they do.
It is interesting that the new Argentine regime is showing balls, and China clearly wants the oil rights when they invade the Falklands.
Thankfully Cameron hasn't lowballed the garrison despite spending cuts just about everywhere.

Interesting that its on the eastern seaboard, not near the islands though.

Next step, China claims their territorial waters reach across the Pacific to Argentina's shores. To prove it, they build some islands nearby.
LOL.

Sounds like they are pretty popular fishing areas. It also sounds like China has an issue with depleted fishing areas but this is easier I suppose.
