BOMBSHELL: Games Workshop Returns to Organized Play

Posted by Larry Vela at March 17, 2016

The players have demanded organized play for 40K and Age of Sigmar – Reports say GW has listened. Here’s the details!

This week the GAMA tradeshow is occurring at Bally’s casino & resort in Las Vegas. This is the major north american industry tradeshow for game manufacturers.

Games Workshop is in attendance this year (see the floormap) and isn’t just manning a booth. They held multiple seminars including one Wednesday, March 16th titled “Build Community”

There was apparently some big news in there. BoLS has been told the following was revealed during the seminar:
GW will be returning to Organized Play!

Details of the Organized Play program are sketchy, and I’m sure the full program will be rolled out over the next few months. But here are the broad brushstrokes of what was reported from the seminar:

The Program will include Organized Play Systems for both Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar.
There will be a “campaign system” for each game.
Prize support is a part of the system.
The system will engage players at the Store, FLGS, and Convention level.

and the big one….

The Age of Sigmar campaign will include some type of “points” system!

This is HUGE NEWS! Games Workshop slowly but surely pulled out of the organized play scene over a handful of years roughly 5-6 years back leaving FLGSs and the entire tournament scene to fend for themselves. Their absence has been keenly felt in an industry with all other major manufacturers pushing forward full steam ahead on the Organized Play front. Privateer Press has a fantastic system up and running with new exciting annual league rules, unique prizes and evolving styles of play. FFG is charging in like a bull with organized play systems for all of their growing systems with lavish prize support (remember Massing at Sullust). Outfits like WizKids do the same with exclusive Organized Play models released each year.

There are a lot of directions GW can go in rolling out an Organized Play system, but it looks after years wandering in the desert that they are coming home – and with a points system for Age of Sigmar!

~More on this story as details come in.

I'm part of a 30k group that has a guy who was actually at the seminar. He showed up on a podcast last night, seen [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBmVaEbKgP4]Here[/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBmVaEbKgP4] at around the 54:30 mark. He was having dinner at the time, and could only talk on his phone, but he provides a little insight into what was going on, and will hopefully have more info soon!

Dayum!

I hope it's a points system that exists outside of the battletomes (maybe in the app). If it's not in print it can be constantly tweaked to perfect the balance.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

I wonder if we will ever get another global campaign. As a new 40k fan I've never gotten a chance to participate in one. It would give me good reason to get into town no matter what and kick some ass in the name of the Greater Good.

I honestly expect the first wave of updates and campaigns to be AoS-related. As Sad Panda has said before: 2016 is the Year of Age of Sigmar as far as GW is concerned. 40k being the golden goose, we definitely won't be ignored completely, but I'm not expecting any FAQ/Errata/campaigns for us for quite some time.

This could go well. I'm slightly hopeful. Granted with the most recent changes being pretty much all to the good I'm more hopeful than I have been in a while.

Not having a points system in AoS is what kept me from buying that game (and was effectively the last straw, getting me to stop buying anything GW altogether). If they can add a points system into AoS, and reboot the game with a better rules framework then it's currently running, I'd be more than happy to give the game a second look. I really thought 8th ed. was Warhammer fantasy perfected, but a (better) skirmish based game which uses all those figures would be amazing as well.

They would need to rework 40k from the bone in order to make it an acceptable game for organized play and official tournaments.

Either they release a total reboot in the form of a new edition, or it will be another episode of nice idea subpar execution.

Progress is like a herd of pigs: everybody is interested in the produced benefits, but nobody wants to deal with all the resulting gak.

GW customers deserve every bit of outrageous princing they get.

5th was a broadly functional competitive set, 7th is essentially 5th laden down with a bunch of extraneous gak and wholesale removal of player agency.

It needs reworking, but perhaps not the root and branch reworking you think.

I'd be more inclined to think they'll go down the route of comping it to encourage playing it the "right" way though, with a lot of soft scores and penalties for spamming etc.

After the Betrayal of Calth & Deathwatch rules, I'm not hopeful that this will make tournament players happy. While they're slowly steering away from the iceberg, they'd have to do a major rules revisions (or throw tons of prize support) to keep it alive.

If it does lead them to rewriting the rules for better gameplay, I will give a hurrah.

You know, I could go for a soft comped narrative event. If GW go this route with the existing 40k ruleset I may dip my toes back in (as will a few others of my ragedy decrepit old school crew).

I'll reserve judgement on how they handle things. We know how badly they could screw this up.
