Subject: How do you equip your Khorne Lord of Skulls?

Since playing CSM nowadays (short of forgeworld) pretty much means playing fluffy games with friends, I finally caved and bought a Khorne Lord of Skulls. I've been eyeing it for a while and decided I wanted an interesting centerpiece for my shelf. That being said, I will want to actually get some table time with it eventually, I just don't know how I should equip it.
I'm liking the idea of the Skullhurler, if for no other reason than the idea of launching an explosion of skulls into a group and watching them go pacman on the survivors. but considering that the KLoS is BS3 is making me a little wary of blast templates. I guess when your at the point that your launching apocalyptic blasts, You're probably gonna hit what your aiming for and any unintentional casualties are just more blood and skulls for Khorne. So with that thought and putting aside how overcosted it is, how do equip yours?

"Because we couldn't be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We've all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we've all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher's Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to the heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn't behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

You don't.
You maybe get your opponent's blessing to use it as a counts-as Kytan.

I prefer the hades cannon myself as a 12 shot krak missile is very useful sure it wont hit as much but it works on flyers and transports better opening them up for assault.
For me the LoS is a fun unit that will kill everything or die doing nothing either way it looks good doing it.

Which hellstorm flamer did you face? The standard S8 AP3 one or the S9 AP3 gets hot instant death one?

I guess when you think about it, the 12 shot krak missile would be the safer option. As cool as the skull hurler is, its just another tool to kill infantry. Its not like the KLoS doesn't already have plenty of tools that already do that. I also agree with you that the LoS is just more of a fun unit than anything else. Within my gaming group. It's very much in the beer and pretzel format vs a competitive one, So I think it'll actually get to have some table time maiming my friends tanks and infantry. Who knows, maybe it'll get an appropriate points adjustment when CSM gets a proper update sometime in the next 15 years?

I didn't realise there was two of them! It was the S8 AP3 one that I faced. I assume that's the one that comes stock then and that nasty looking Instant Death one probably makes the LoS more expensive.

It's already 888 pts. Whats another 65 at that point?
Seriously though,I just think its not worth it though. S9 is nice, but its still only doubling out T4 and lower. So it's instant death against most things already. Though, being able to instant death multi wound deathstars would be nice. But the possibility of Gets Hot makes me shy away from it, and i said previously, its already good at killing infantry. With 9 wounds and 6 SD attacks on the charge minimum, any deathstars it can catch, will be turned into a fine paste.

When I take the lord of skulls I fully upgrade him with the skullhurler and instant death hellstorm weapon. It just makes it really fun to take against horde armies + the S9 on the hellstorm means it can take on vehicles at range as well. Points wise it is a little steep but you are gonna be taking him in apocalypse games so who cares about 100-200 points for some extra fun.
Personally I have used him against Orks and IG, both times he slaughtered hundreds (maybe an exaggertion). Both times he died but he took a good chunk of their army with him, against the Ork: a stompa, 2 blob squads of boyz and some Nobz, against the IG: a malchador, several lemon russ/tank destroyers and several squads of guard.

Everything that was used came with the normal Lord of Skulls kit. Nothing much was cut or shaped.
The other thing I did was shave off a couple spikes/trim pieces here and there.

I'd agree with full upgrades - if you specifically taking a lord of skulls, go for the unique stuff. Mass S8 fire you can get from blastmasters, hades autocannons, butcher cannons, etc.
A massive template with sort-of-ignores cover and sort of reduces invulnerable saves is very useful.
Definitely keep the hellstorm template. Without stomp you want big templates to keep chaff and tarpits away.
