Hey guys I have a question for yas

I was playing a guy the other day and he was playing imperal first. All his models where imperal guard..... Confusing but wth right.

Now here is the thing the guys army was 90 % troopers...

For scouts he gave them the normal guy with green stuff barrels
For marines kept them normal
For terminators he used kashakin models and glued missle launchers to their shoulder.
For a dreadnought he has two tropers he glued standing on each other and said it is equiped with blah what ever.
The worse of it all and I mean worse was his rhino or baneblade or who knows what a box he glied plasti card to cut 2 holes in it and glued some guns on it from the guardsman.

Now I am all for a budget and doing your own thing but.... Where does the rule of cool and need to actually use the damn model take into account?

I played the game but lost I think I couldnt tell anything all the guys had rifles that where missle launchers ect... It was horrible.

I need to go to work every day.
Millions of people on welfare depend on me.

Counts-as, conversions, proxies, and anything else all come down to personal preference, but I think a good rule of thumb would be how much effort did this person put into the model? The list you describe just sounds . . . I don't want to call it "lazy", but that seems to be the best thing I can think of to describe it. I probably would have played the game, but he'd never see me again until he'd put some love into his army.

I do play in a pretty lax game group. It's not uncommon to see unpainted armies or (no joke) red Solo cups used as drop pods, but it's allowed with the expectation that you will eventually finish painting that army and buy the actual drop pods. If you aren't showing progress on your models, we eventually stop playing you.

You can sculpt all the models yourself if you play against me. I would love you for that if you are actually able to pull it off.
Stores on the other hand might not like you that much if you show up with that army.

Just let your opponent know that his army is too confusing.

I'd be ok with this, I suppose, except for the dreadnought. I doubt that two troopers standing on shoulders is nearly the size of a dreadnought. That could allow him to get away with denying LoS thanks to a smaller model. The tank also seems pretty lazy. If it were one of my friends and he was trying out a new list before he bought the models, I'd be ok with it.But, if it's somebody who's always using a shoebox as a tank and two guardsmen as a dread, I'd be uneasy about continuously allowing those two.

Here's to me in my sober mood,
When I ramble, sit, and think.
Here's to me in my drunken mood,
When I gamble, sin, and drink.
And when my days are over,
And from this world I pass,
I hope they bury me upside down,
So the world can kiss my ass!

ITT someone is taking the piss. Either the OP or the guy in the story, which one however is up for debate.

I'd play him once, but the next time I saw him at least some of the models should be the right ones. If he's making progress, then I'd keep playing him otherwise I wouldn't.

Most of these won't fly by me cuz they sound downright confusing at times to know what is what, let alone having a decent profile of the unit they're suppose to represent (Guardsmen are ok for scouts and marines, iffy for terminators, and downright wtf for Dreadnoughts unless they're making a human pyramid).

Tell him if he likes guard models, he should just play a guard army. There's a fine line between being creative and just being lazy and cheap, especially since I've seen some really creative stuff come out of necessity.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
