Hey lads,
looking to get back into the game after a long hiatus. Last army I played was a large Black Legion force with a bit of everything.

At the moment, not really sure what I want to do, curious to hear some opinions and ideas.

I like playing assault-themed armies (or at least medium range). As long as it's in your face and not sitting there for the entire game.

Because of this I'm pondering playing World Eaters (using that new Khorne Daemonkin book), Death Guard or Orks. I'd love to do a loyalist marine force but not many seem to interest me in terms of gameplay. I love painting and aesthetic too and they def have that. Are there any cool Space Marine armies that may play a more in your face style? Just putting it out there that I dislike Space Wolves, Blood Angels and Carcharodons for personal reasons.

Looking for some thoughts, ideas, suggestions. If I can paint a cool army that's in the enemies face, making him sweat, I'll be happy. Also a big fan of the lore of 40k, so having some reading material wouldn't hurt.

Regards

Well you eliminated most of the loyalist assault armies right off the bat so that makes it tricky. Honestly the most in your face and assault heavy of the remaining IoM armies would be Grey Knights with their short range shooting and everything basically being an assault unit. Not the easiest to customize in terms of painting and modeling but they have a great visual look to them. They are actually decently fun to play and actually having a strong psychic phase is nice. Decently strong with some real powerhouse units in their Dreadknights, Purifiers, and Terminators. Low model count army so they are easy to get an army up to snuff and on the table. Also one of the cheapest armies to start with a 1500 or even a 2000 point list being doable for $300 US new.

Orks are my favorite army in the game but I won't pretend that Orks are a strong army. They die by the bucket load and tend to not pack the punch to take down the newest big threats but in most casual games they are a blast to play. Best army for anybody who likes to do conversions and kitbashing as Orks are made to loot bits and make cobbled together weapons and vehicles. A decent amount of ways to run them and they can do well if played smart.

Don't really know much about KDK or Death Guard. Chaos Space Marines are in a really rough shape right now with their codex being in desperate need of an update. Daemons on the other hand are incredibly strong and quite capable although they seem like you need a lot of models for a standard size game.

I play Night Lords personally. I like their story. But I also like their aggression. They are very much about cornering the enemy like a rat and making them pay for cowardice in their game play.

If you enjoy that you may like Night Lords.

As for competitive play, which probably isn't in your short term future since you're just returning, but I might suggest a couple other options. The White Scars now have some very good assault formations if you wanted to play Mariens. Space Wolf Thunder Cavalry will rock your socks off also.

if Xenos are your thing and you want rock solid aggression it's a little harder to find but orks are the most dedicated adherents to that philosophy. Meganobz are excellent and the Orks can take Kommandos with some cool formations and of course this can be backed up by artillery that is truly nasty in some places. Not over the top but potent at what it focus's on. Orks are also ne of the funest armies to play against or as. So added bonus. Takes some practice and a will of iron to paint them all, but from a purely aesthetic point of view, they fit the Xeno bill.

You may hear pople say assault isnt as big a thing. But it is most definitely a thing.

Do you not like the Blood Angels themselves or their rules? Have you considered using their codex but just have a different color scheme and difference in lore? How about their successor chapters like Flesh Tearers?

Here's to me in my sober mood,
When I ramble, sit, and think.
Here's to me in my drunken mood,
When I gamble, sin, and drink.
And when my days are over,
And from this world I pass,
I hope they bury me upside down,
So the world can kiss my ass!

I feel like the Death Guard would definitely be an interesting choice both in terms of their background fluff as well as creating fluffy tabletop lists. If you do post-Heresy Death Guard, that will definitely be fun and interesting because they've already fallen to Chaos. if you do pre-Heresy, it may be a little less competitive on the tabletop because the only advantages I can think of off the top of my head is their relatively high resistance to poisons (I think that was even turned into a ritual pre-Heresy) which is something I don't see you needing often, and advantages in Night Fighting which is a really small part of the game unless you house rule it.

I would still go with Death Guard. You don't see many people playing them and at least fluff-wise, they're very interesting.

Plus SCYTHES!!! haha

There are no Night Lords or Legions/Warbands of any kind in CSM's... There are colour schemes and everyone sharing the exact same unit pool & options, with absolutely 0 individual flavour.

You forgot the Black Legion supplement. You remember the one where the fluff directly contradicts the crunch only a few pages further into the book and adds cripplingly expensive mandatory upgrades across the entire army. And lets not forget the 75 points one-use relic that could easily miss the target.

If you don't want to play the game on ultrahard mode, don't continue with the CSM until a new codex/campaign book comes along.

Some competitive melee oriented armies for you to consider with names that certainly bring up more info with Google:

-Khorne Daemonkin
-Space Wolves Wolfstar
-Chaos Daemons (Screamerstar, Nurgle Drone Star)
-Ravenwing Strike Force (does a bit of both, shoot and melee)
-White Scars (bikes, Smashbane)

You could also quite easily make a Space Wolves army with another chapter (or even traitors, quite easily doable with say, World Eaters using Juggernauts as Thunderwolves, some daemonic hound miniatures as Fenrisian Wolves.)

If that is how your imagination works, cool.
