I just got the 7th edition rules and have some question about detachment and formation rules. I have Space Wolves and saw that I can use other Space Marine chapters, Imperial Guard, and Skitarii? as an allied detachment without any penalty. And that pretty much anything other than Eldar can come with pretty big penalties if they come anywhere near my Space Wolves (1 in 6 chance of that happening each turn?).

-Does anyone ever play armies that are May Come the Apocalylpse for allies? Can you play this in a regular tournament setting (or do tournaments limit your allies?

-With a 6 ft across playing area, I would think not deploying within 12 inches of each other shouldn't be a problem - how is this resolved if you use droppods and a Space Wolf unit scatters to within 12 inches of say allied Necrons or Orks?

-What other armies would complement Space Wolves well (regardless of penalties in deployment or other penalties from ally restrictions)?

-As for formations, how do they work, from the Space Wolves Codex, I saw one listed, The Great Company. Does that mean that my army can only take what is listed in the Great Company and nothing else? Or can you use multiple formations in the same army?

-Can you use allied detachments while using a formation? Can your allied attachment use formations from their codex?

Thanks!

As far as Come the Apoc aliies and Tourneys go, it depends on the Tourney. I have heard many tourneys do not allow CtA or Unbound, but others (like in my area) are pretty relaxed and allow whatever. I have won two 1850 touneys with Eldar mixed with 2 Necron Canoptek Harvests. It was so brutal, I got rid of the Harvests on eBay.

Overall you can pick any mix of Detachments (including just using Formantions) to field as your army. The only restriction is that an Allied Detahcment cannot contain your Warlord and must be from a different Faction as your Primary detachment (the detachment with your Warlord). So if you want to use a Formation as your Primary, then add an Allied, go right ahead.

If you want to use the Great Company as your army, yes, you must use the units detailed in its datasheet.

Does anyone have ideas what complements the Space Wolves well? Is there a computer program available that lists all the stats for the units? I'm not planning on buying $50 codexes to find out that there isn't anything I'd want to use.

Space Wolves are part of the Imperial Armies, so pretty much any other Space Marine book will go well with them. There are literally so many options that it is hard to name just a few.

A White Scar detachment could be good if you play lots of Thunderwolves. Attach a WS character on bike to give Scout.
