A simple question with many possible answers.
Hey guys I'm hoping some of you might share your talent and wisdom and help me figure out how I should be painting my army

This is the army in question, in it's entirety.
Yes, at this point they are only 3 models but I have resolved to 100% complete every 5 models I put together. That means converted, painted, and based.
Production is slow but I'm rolling up to my first 5 converted models and have been starting to think about a good colour scheme to really capture and/or accentuate their samurai aesthetic.

I've been thinking something along the lines of this.
Spoiler:
Orange/Red, White/black, Gold

Thoughts?

Great green stuff. One thing you are missing however is the lacing commonly found on samurai armour. While it makes sense not to have it due to it being future armour the lacing does help it look visually distinct.

So samurai armour in the sengoku period primarily came in two colours, red and black. Black being the most common. There were other colours however including a brown rust like colour. Lacing on samurai often looks good when the colour is very distinct from the armour colour for example yellow against red or white against black.

I think sashimono on the back would look great on these too.

If I was going to do paint these would probably paint one commander model a different colour to the others and stick sashinono on the lot of them

I think your red and gold coliurscheme will work great however and can't wait to see it on the model. If you go for that I recommend red for the top armour, brown, tan or linnen for the armour underneath and then yellow and gold for trims, horns etc

really cool!
I think having a variety of colours in your army would really make them come across as samurai. also maybe stick some of the banners on their backs like in the last samurai http://ejmas.com/jtc/lastsamurai/photo-14.jpg

Thanks man, that sure does help me figure out what direction to go in. I totally understand what you're saying about the lacing, alas my GS skills, casting skills, and patience are not quite there yet. I could probably do some small rectangular clasp/latch between the plates to show them being held together just to add that little bit of extra detail.

As for painting I was considering making the bulk of the army orange with the officers/high rank marines red and then the commander his own kind of scheme.

Oh and dont worry, I'm planning on giving them all banners on which I can denote their chapter and which squad they belong

I've not seen those before no. They look pretty nifty though! Are those katanas from anvil or somewhere else?

Yeah I'm digging the red and gold, my only concern is that the scheme will be too closely matching with the Blood Angels which is part of the reason why I'm considering orange for the troops. I dont want them to look anything like other marine chapters, particularly the original legions. The reason for this is that I'm doing up some background fluff for them which links them to one of the 2 unkown legions. They're to be a sort of second founding for the legion in a far off corner of the galaxy away from the Imperium. So yes, they'll be Renegade Marines (Inb4 HERESY )

I'm planning to do up a whole backstory for them that goes way back to the scattering of the primarchs, in particular the origin of the unknown primarch who eventually founded their chapter far outside the influence of the Imperium, and even further back to the Dark Age of Technology when their home-world was first colonised by humans.
But if you wanna hear more you'll just have to wait, and keep an eye on my project

Cheers man. Dont worry, there'll be plenty of variation among them and I am looking into the best way to give them all sashimonos. I'll either be making them myself, or ordering a bunch of the Eldar Dire Avengers banners and/or DEldar Kabalite Warrior banners.

If it helps with inspiration here is how I started painting my Samurai (Not space marines)

Those a quite nice, I like the guy on the far right in the first pic. I would totally consider painting my commander in a similar scheme (Probably with more gold detailing).
I really like the scenery too!

Cheers

Also, I feel gotta ask, from what you can see in the pictures can you identify what weapons I've given them?

I want my opponents to be able to identify my units for what they are while also maintaining a distinctly unique aesthetic.

Great conversions. I believe drybrushed dark crimson with black underarmour would look fantastic

I know the Emperor's Shadows have a semi Japanese theme. Maybe make them ES veterans?

Red certainly does seem to be the way to go.

Wow I didn't know there was an actual japanese themed chapter already existing within the 40k-verse, they do look pretty sweet.
I am, however, doing my own custom chapter so I wont be using their colour scheme, but thank you for putting me onto these guys. They shall serve as further inspiration for my project

Close, the ones on their arms are meant to be compacted bolters and the over the shoulder ones are bolt pistols. On the sgt is a combi-melta (he has no pistol, it was traded for the combi-melta)

The army-wide rule is:
On their wrist is their main gun (bolter/melta. no plas for fluff reasons) over their shoulder is their pistol (no plas) or their combi-shot (no plas)
No unit carries a pistol and a combi-shot as the pistol is traded for the combi

I hope this isnt too confusing and easy enough to understand. I'll be doing the whole army like this

Personally I'm not a fan of using both the arm mounting and the backpack mount. Representing bolt pistols on a tac marine isn't that big of a issue in my eye, as most know that most marines have one. I'd say pick one mount and use that. Which one? That's the hard choose.....

If I did pick one over the other I would probably go with the wrist-mounted bolters but would still mount combi-shots as shoulder cannons on any model that had them.

Still, aesthetically I like how they are now and would only make such alterations if they were causing unnecessary confusion during play.
