Hi Dakka Dakka!
I've been mulling over a way to improve the magnetisation of my Tau crisis suits. In the past I've had success using 2mm x 0.5mm disk magnets and drilling holes into the weapons and arms of the crisis suit. This and similar methods have been covered quite a few times in many guides along with liberal use of green stuff and other improvements. Although I've had trouble with weapons spinning when handled which has become irritating. There are ways round this by using green stuff or carefully aligning the magnets with the pre existing nubs and sockets on the weapons and hands respectively. Not being the best at either task I've been reluctant to go further.
Since buying the new versions of the crisis suit models I've been trying to think of a way of magnetising them to stop the weapons spinning but at the same time keeping some of the nice detail that have now been moulded into the hand sockets:
After doing some measuring I found that a block magnet 3mm long and 1mm wide would fit both the jet packs and hand sockets. The sockets themselves are actually a tiny bit wider than 1mm so there should be some travel. A small amount of green stuff could solve the extra space in the hands or could be left as is if sliding is not a problem. As for the depth, a magnet of 0.5mm would be perfect as then no drilling would be needed and the magnets could simply be glued in.
Now as for the weapon I plan to shave down the nub and superglue the magnet directly over the same area. The question is will this be enough to hold the magnet in place without carving out a space to sink the magnet into.
Now for the magnets; I set out to find a set of 3mm x 1mm x 0.5mm block magnets with no luck. The closest I found were 3mm x 1mm x 1mm magnets from a US retailer and I'd have to pay an extortionate amount to have them delivered to me in the
UK. So I contacted a supplier I'd used previously, who cater somewhat towards the hobby. It was a long shot, and after explaining what I wanted to do and the popularity of magnetising crisis suits they offered to have some manufactured! There's a 5 week lead time however so I'll be waiting around a while to see whether it works. Just in case, I did order some magnets of similar sizes to see how they'd work.
In exchange for them being so helpful I offered to let people know they'd be stocking this size magnet as I couldn't possibly fill a full manufacture order myself. Their website is here

I'll update as to the progress with the the other magnet sizes I got (if any) and in the mean time I'd like to hear other people's experience with magnetising these models and how they get about the spinning issue. It's quite a fiddly job and I guess I'd like to do it with as little grief as possible
