'lo there

I know it's been done before, but I was hoping someone could help give me some advice in starting a legion.

I originally wanted to do a loyalist shattered traitor legion, a death guard terminator praetor with a guard of grave wardens alongside word bearers who're still zealous for the emperor featuring Assault squads and some Ashen circle.

I wanted to do an army that was built on solid, gritty core that was augmented by fast units, there to be used for counter attacks and picking off flanks. I was told however that there was no way this would fly fluff wise and decided to drop it.

I really wanted to do something loyal, but I prefer the dirty, darker look held (generally) by legions that turned traitor, already having done craptons of prim and proper blood angels for 40k. Death Guard, Word Bearers, Raven Guard, Night Lords and Dark Angels are all things that have interested me and I was wondering if any one had any ideas, not matter how general, that could help give me some inspiration.

Thanks, The Tallest Giraffe.

Why not just do a Loyalist "traitor" legion? there was plenty of spare loyalists post Isvaan in the traitor legions

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Well buy 2 Calth sets to start. EC play the way you want. Assault grit down your throat w/ out flaking units.

This is what I was thinking of doing, but the fluff of using the specialist units in a loyalist side is something I've now become a bit worried about. The shattered legions fluff is what really interested me but it seems as though if I wanted it to be fluffy it'd mostly just be tac squads, devastators, etc as the higher echelon guys wouldn't have turned traitor, or more accurately stayed loyal, from their parent legions.

There's lots of pics around the internet of suitably weathered loyal marines from 30k that might inspire you. The dirty look seems to be pretty universal in HH.

The surviving Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard are probably the dirtiest and most weathered marines around after Isstvan. They make the Death Guard look clean.
