Hey I just wanted to see what you guys though of this idea, how it could be improved... the likes. what about taking an army of just grots? you could fit hundreds of them into a 1000 point battle, and over 1000 of them in 5000 point battles. what would you guys build for this? or is it even a good idea?

1. Do you have that many models?
2. Do you realize how awful your deployment and movement phase would be?

I used to run green tide with 180+ models. It gets old really quick.

haha yes I do realize. there are bases that move as one though. I think it would be kind of fun. haha but seeing as you have done this you most likely know better.

My grot-centric list is all grots, Mek Gunz, forgeworld Grot Tanks, and a Stompa. It's basically a rolling gunline with layers of fearless chaff. It's surprisingly effective and hilarious.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I did a grot trench army once. It was fun to play, but aweful when it came to actually being able to win. I had other units in the army besides grots, but my grot forces mainly just stayed in the trench network.

Armies:
The Iron Waagh: 10,000+ 8th Edition Tournament Record: 4-7-1
Salamanders: 5,000 8th Edition Tournament Record: 4-2
Ultramarines: 4,000
Armored Battle Company (DKoK): 4000
Elysians: 500
Khorne Daemons: 2500

Orks were my first army. It wasn't bad at the time. But once I switched over to other armies, I tried going back to orks. I couldn't do it. I just looked at all the models and was like "What was I thinking?"

Now, if you wanted to do this for the proverbial S&G's, then it could be fun. But most people don't have that many grots. I have a lot by most standards and I might have 60.

Best suggestion I can think of would be taking a lot of CADs with 2 units of grots and 3 units of Mek Guns. For HQs maybe take Big Meks with Shock Attack Guns and/or Mega Armor for each Mek Gun to give them respectable leadership and can tank as T7 with 2+ armor. Try to be a really shooty army and use basic grots as speed bumps to buy time for your gunz to do work. Lobbas, Kannons, Kustom Mega Kannons, and maybe Trakkors being the types of Mek Guns worth using.

If you want to get mechanized you can get some Grot Tanks from FW (or some 3rd party kits or scratch build your own) or Killa Kans (Grot tanks are better IMO).

Tactically, it's very limited, as above.

But if it's the grot models you love, you can expand your available units considerably by having converted grot models counting-as ork models - e.g. a grot-piloted mini-kan the same size as and counting-as a mega-armoured nob. Works great for some units, but difficult for others, e.g. counts-as boyz would be hard to model, unless perhaps done as some sort of grot exo-skeleton with robotic limbs?

Put two grots on a base trying to aim a shoota, or hold a choppa.

You might need to put them on a raised base to mimic a boy's height, but yes, that's not a bad idea:
- one grot firing a shoota which is resting on another grot's shoulders = counts-as shoota boy
- one grot firing a slugga, with another grot waving a large close combat weapon = counts-as slugga boy
certainly heaps of modelling potential

personally its just the character of the grots themselves... I think that converting them like that would be difficult but definitely worth the time. Thanks for the ideas

So long as it is centered around your artillery, you might do okay. Your Big Gunz (or whatever they're called) are one of your good units. Just supplement with Tank Bustaz and shooty Killa Kanz.

It'd be a Gunline style army, but the units are cheap enough to fit in a ton of them.

If you'll be doing lots of grot conversions, check out WHFB goblin models for some variety and bits swapping. I made a pile of mek gun crew mostly from Night Goblins and bits.

And if you don't mind going non-GW, http://bitsofwar.com has some excellent sci-fi and fantasy goblin models.
