Hi all,

I recently became very interested in Battlefleet Gothic, main reason being my best friend loves the 40K universe but doesn't have the money or time for a 40k army, but he loves the standalone games like Space Hulk, Execution Force and Deathwatch. This got me thinking that BFG may be a good thing to pick up, as I love the models, and it seems to be played on a smaller scale than 40k with easier to pick up rules.

However, I did a bit of browsing on eBay and the prices for BFG are just insane, I saw individual ships (nothing special, just a standard battleship) going for approx. £30 each, far beyond my budget. I'm wondering if there are other sources to get such models. I've heard of third-party companies that make similar models that would be good stand-ins (I'm not asking for recasters before you go to the mods), but are there any budget-friendlier ways to get into the game?

Also, I'm curious as to what would constitute a good fleet size? I've had a look over the rosters and there's a nice variety of ships, so is there a particular ratio of Battleships:Cruisers:Escorts etc that would be ideal for a starting player?

Thanks,

Valk

Hello!

Very awesome to hear you're getting into BFG. It's really one of the best games GW ever made.

Finding the official models can be really tricky and pricy (but GW might be producing them soon if rumours are true). However, in the meantime you'll be stuck to third party models.

Some examples:

Battlegroup Helios: great for cruisers and escorts.

Vanguard Miniatures: in case you're looking for escorts, light cruisers, or transport ships.

Okb 14: some Space Marine standins, space stations and mines.

Winter's Bioforge: Tyranid standins.

Void Crucible: for all your ordnance needs.

By the way, not all the old official stuff is super expensive, I mean look at this!

You could use papercrafted ships or use stand ins, the current 32mm bases are the same size as the old flight bases

Battlefleet Gothic is great fun! Please let us know how you guys get on with it

HERE are some more starship options:

GZG starships are nicely priced and the range is very large. I have used NSL and NAC ships to represent Imperials myself. The service is also very good.

Brigade Models have brought out a series of ships that are also very useful and reasonably priced.

Fleet size wise, the original game box had 4 cruisers per side and that feels about right. It would be cheap and still give you options for different lists up to 1000 points a side. You would still want escorts... Maybe 4 cruisers and 8 escorts to get you started?
