Subject: What to use to thin paint in the pot?

I'm transferring my GW paints to droppers so I can easily use them with both brush and airbrush, and so far I've been using a 20:1 solution of distilled water and flow aid to help transfer the paints. I've only done maybe 6-7 paints so far. For the Air paints, I didn't need more than 7-8 drops of the thinning solution to make them flow nicely, but to a brand new Layer paint I added about 80 (!!!) drops to make it transferable, and even then it's still very thick and lots of paint is left in the pot.
My question is, am I doing it wrong? Is distilled water and flow-aid a bad way to thin paint in the pot? I've read some people say that you shouldn't thin with water because it messes with the properties of the paint... Should I switch to some other thinning solution? Maybe airbrush thinner?

Don't use Tamiya X20-A - it'll turn the paint solid.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

I used flo aide, stop dri, and water - worked fine. 80 drops is insane for a layer, i think that paint is dead.

Actually the paint is fine, it was completely new and still looks great, 80 drops is 4 ml though which is a lot... How much did you use?

Like 8 drops for a layer, 12 for a base, 4 for a wash

That's very little! I started with 20 drops and it didn't seem to make much of a difference... I'll try with less next time and see if it still works.

What I did was
- first I added enough to make the paint easier to pour and come out more like a stream rather than big drops. Maybe 20-50 drops.
- when I had gotten out as much as possible I added more to get as much as possible out, maybe another 10-20 drops. After this the pot is still mostly covered with paint on the inside but you can't really pour anymore out. The paint in the new dropper bottle is still pretty thick but thinner than it was at firstx
