Hello,
I'm creating my own Skitarii legion and thought that since Dakkanauts ( ) helped me with my problems regarding the weaponry of Skitarii and gave me few ideas on how to introduce volkite weapons to 40k setting I decided to share my questionable talent with you (oh my )
Origins:
Spoiler:
Forge/Hive World Belacane - Once very influential Hive World runned by the Adeptus Mechanicus, who created vast forges using slave-workers (that consist 90% of the world population) to build, maintain and work themselves to death in their manufactories or mining the always needed iron. Every forge, manufactory or house is built undearneath the surface due to harsh environment (with average temperature being -40°C). Led (for the time) by Archmagos Daedus from a tank similar to that housing the venerable Titan pilots. Due to his vast knowledge of stasis technology (with rumours of being consulted by the Mechanicus maintaining the Golden Throne) he made Belacane the capital of stasis field generators, but after decades spent researching stasis his dying body gave way, which left Belacane without their flagship product since Daedus was jealously guarding secrets of stasis. Cabal of highest ranking Magos kept his death a secret to maintain their status, though they are more and more desperate due to their total ignorance in the field of stasis technology. They created the Cohort serving both as secret police that keeps any information leak sealed and every threat to the status of the Forge World mitigated as well as aggressively searching for technology, stepping as low as raiding other Mechanicus in search of clues or newly found relics.
Short description:
Spoiler:
The Cohort is kept secret from everyone on the need-to-know basis. Since they officially don’t exist, any contact with any other forces is kept to minimum and if discovered by the Imperial forces they are to either remove any witnesses or cover their tracks and disappear. They are given the best equipment on hands including secretly manufactured volkite weapons - true testament to the technology hoarding habit of both Daedus and the cabal that replaced him. Diminishingly called by those who know of their existence Keroseners because of their weapon of choice and the war cry
“We are the Flame!”
Recruitment:
Spoiler:
Although Belacane can supply endless amounts of lives without even rising an eyebrow on mysteriously disappearances, morbidly suspicious Techlords decided to not bother with selecting and mind washing conscripts from the malnourished populace. They conceived a side project to their servitor vat-growing lab and created a genetically superior soldiers (paying the most attention to traits like obedience, loyalty and robust physiology) to be later on trained into shock troops on freezing surface of Belacane. Survivors are welcomed to the fold of the Cohort.
Organisation:
Spoiler:
Led by the Archmagos Prime - Varashev Kandela and answering only to the Techlords. He leads his troops from the Blazing Dawn - cruiser outfitted to be more than capable of combat and extended period of combat readiness without resupply (mostly coming down to scavenging the parts needed for the small manufactory on-board in order to provide required replacements and/or repairs).
Keroseners are a Cohort consisting of 5 Century each having 100 Skitarii soldiers (not counting the Centurion and his honour guard). Apart from the Balisteria and Sicarians, Hyspasists of the Cohort are divided into Decuries consisting of 10 Hyspasists.
In order to show how the Centuries are organised I’ll list in detail the First Century:
- Centurion Nikolai - Most venerable of the whole century, bears his rank as more of an badge of honour rather than actual duty as any tactical insight comes from the Magos on-board the Blazing Dawn.
- 9 Veteran Honour Guard - Accompany the Centurion, given the best equipment and most changed as a result of aggressive augmentation and reconstruction (many of them received wounds that took great parts of their bodies when serving as Hyspastis or Rangers)
- 2 Squads of Ruststalkers - Front-line commandos, provide support in terms of close quarters encounters as well as an assassinating the key targets on the battlefield.
- 1 Squad of Infiltrators - Reconnaissance and harassment unit, created to gather information about the enemy and transmit it directly to the Blazing Dawn, during engagement their main function is to hit swift and hard from the concealed position to disrupt the enemy battle plan.
- 2 Decuries of Rangers - Outfitted with more deadly, long-ranged armament. Taken from the promising Hyspastis recruits and being put through even more rigorous training. Serves as ears and eyes of whole century.
- 5 Decuries of Hyspastis - Basic and most common soldiers, augmented to improve their already impressive vat-grown endurance and agility.
- 15 Balisterii - They man the Onagers and Ironstriders of century, each century having at least 9 Ironstriders and 6 Onagers at their disposal.
Weaponry:
Spoiler:
Every member of the Cohort is given deadly volkite-based weaponry. From the humble Volkite Carbine to massive Volkite Eradicator, when the battle begins Keroseners look like spreading forest fire melting both metal and flesh. Terrifying nature of volkite leaves even most steadfast veterans on the verge of retreat as their companions are made into walking torches, secreting enormous amounts of heat as they flail helplessly in their ranks causing even more damage and chaos.
Most notable of the weapons are:
- Volkite Carbine (Rad Carbine) - the humblest of volkite weaponry at their disposal, this weapon is the most common among the Hyspastis ranks, having reasonable range, rate of fire and power, though not excelling in neither. Its most notable use is against low or unarmoured targets as the heat delivered to the target may also set ablaze those next to it.
- Volite Fire Pike (Arc Rifle) - More bulkier, requiring external power supply and comparable in power to Volkite Carbine, the Fire Pike excel against armoured targets, although not in sheer stopping power. It can be fired for prolonged periods of time, literally cooking tanks crews inside their steel behemoths while also damaging their more sophisticated systems.
- Volkie Caliver (Plasma Caliver) - Fast firing, overcharged version of Carbine, requiring bulky power supply and cooling system to be worn by the user. Although potentially deadly to unfortunate soul wielding it, the sheer killing power of this weapon almost guarantees their usage in any combat engagement, although requiring expensive replacements part that are prone to break.
- Volkite Culverin (Autocannon) - It’s designed as the hammer of the Volkite weaponry family, maybe not having impressive fire rate or sophisticated means of armour penetration but giving more than enough power to create great casualties. Unfortunately its size makes their usage possible only to the vehicles.
- Volkite Eradicator (Eradicator Beamer) - Designed with only one goal in mind - melting anything it come across. Although the goal was achieved against enemies close by, Eradicator loses its power against those further due to dissipating heat. However, canny crews of Onagers are able to use that to their advantage as they are able to cover larger impact radius - perfect for thinning down enemy infantry.
Also worth noting is the fact that the Ironstriders are lacking the servitor component, as movement and firing is controlled by specially trained member of the Balisteria and any required calculation is being dealt with by servitors on-board the Blazing Dawn with which Ironstriders are in constant short ranged connection (If the connection is lost its combat abilities are hindered and if it’s not restored the crew is ordered to destroy the machine and go into hiding until further notice)
Tactics:
Spoiler:
Not having sufficient amount of expendable troops and their need to operate in secret, Keroseners rely on short, brutal raids during which they are to achieve the goal set by the command and retreat with as little casualties as possible and covering their tracks to stop the retaliation. As they are trained on both the surface of the Belacane and specially prepared course that prepares them when defending or attacking the space ship they excel in combat on either arctic wastes or during ship boarding actions. Due to complete dependence on Blazing Dawn tactical assessment and supplies, if at any time the contact with the Cruiser is lost Skitarii are commanded to remain in combat readiness and go into hiding. If after certain time the contact is not restored they are to destroy any technology they carry and arm the self-destruction mechanism.
That’s it for now, hope you enjoyed reading it. Any comments and critique is welcome
