I was just thinking about this - Of the two Necron diseases, the Flayer Virus and Destroyer Curse, the latter is the one harder to stop, since it has been said repeatedly that all Necrons will succumb to it in the end. That said, Necron Warriors are essentially little more than robots with a slight spark of organic hatred in, nothing you could call a mind really, so will they ever become Destroyers in the same way?

I would assume that it is a possibility. Haven't had a chance to really read the Necron fluff all the way through.

I know back when Necrons were first introduced as a playable army when a Destroyer went down and you made the Re-animation protocol roll (or whatever it was called then) they got back up as a warrior.

So that would support that a warrior could be turned into a destroyer but that was back in 3rd edition before their fluff was really fleshed out.

The destroyer curse isn't inevitable, unless that was stated before the 5th ed codex. I've never encountered a source that said that, let alone multiple, so could you provide them please?

They do say that all necrons were driven insane to some degree by the great sleep. However, this is a big range that we can see goes all the way from Anrakyr (completely sane as far as we know) to Nemessor Zandrekh ("cron Quixote").

However, to your original point: no, necron warriors cannot become destroyers. This was actually explicitly covered in the 5th ed codex. Apparently, destroyers actually need some kind of free will, which warriors lack. Most destroyers were immortals and lychguard, and a few converts were deathmarks. Destroyer lords are obviously former nobles, and they are by far the most dangerous due to the degree of intelligence they retained after biotransference.

I don't have my Codexes to hand, but I'm sure there were a few quotes from Necron Lords talking about their concern that their memory engrams would all eventually fail and they'd become the nihilistic Daleks Destroyers. I might be wrong, maybe I was misinterpreting quotes about their worry that once the galaxy is cleansed of life the Destroyers would come for the rest of the Necrons and got them muddled up or something. I'll check when I'm back with my books.
