Hey all,

So I am feeling starved for STAW news. With the whole release schedule up in the air, I am on edge waiting to find out what is going on.

As for gaming my way I posted my last OP for the Void. I have the Doomsday Machine coming up in a few weeks at one venue. I still have no clue what it going on at my other store. They say they have a ton of STAW OP stuff in the back but can't sort out where or when

I was hoping to get some people together for some home brew games this past week, but we had a nasty stomach bug go through the family. At least one day someone was sick Oh well here is hoping for next week.

As for ship buying I think I have everything except the most current wave and the Xindi Sphere thing, not being a big Enterprise fan I may hold out on that one for a while. I was ready to buy wave 23 and just couldn't get excited about it . Their not bad ships, just not exciting either. I found a few ships hiding on the back of the rack I decided to buy instead. The store had a Thunderchild and a Chang's BoP left, these went really fast in my area so I snatched them up. I was never a super fan of the Akira class before STAW, but DAMN, every time I look at that model I like it more

What has everyone been up to?

I just picked up another Core Set (Yay, finally a fourth Vor'Cha!) as well as two more Vidian Battlecruisers (12 bucks total for both), two Andorian Battle Cruisers, 3 Sabers (I am an idiot, so I buy more than is needed), and 1 copy of the Jazkal and Amar.

I drafted up rules for Classifying each ship into a Warship classification, and them placing limits on the different classes for each game. (Firepower + Hull = Classification Number). the classes are limited to prevent things like spamming all huge hull ships, and forces you to get creative.

These rule modifications are hopefully going to be applied to a second draft at a Galactic Conquest-styled game, where our battles will shape the general course of a larger war.

I like the idea of limiting ship classes. I contemplated something similar but it never got off the ground.

I will eventually pick up wave 23. Like you I'm in it for the long haul so I get at least 1 of everything. I do like the Saber class, I have 2 of the Yeager. It's nice a little brother to the Defiant class, but I have 4 of those So when I'm looking for a little gun ship it they usually hot the table, better shields and a rear arc.

4 Vor'Chas is nice. I keep thinking about another starter but with the Drovana coming next month and the Venture over the summer, I keep telling myself to hold off. I did finally get the MU Vor'Cha so that gives me 3, in our home games it will definitely become part of the Klingon fleet.

$12 for 2 Vidiians is cool . I keep meaning to pick up a 3rd myself, some Kazon vs Vidiian action

Where's the best place to get STAW news? I've a new addition to the community and still working out where to get news and previews.

Over the weekend I played a couple of games with my mate, him playing Federation against my Romulans. I didn't do well :(.

Still trying to buy up all the Romulan ships, picked up a bundle over the weekend that included a Valdore, a D'deridex and a RIS Vo. Also in the bundle was a Defiant, a Voyager and a DS9, which is awesome! Then this morning a Gal Gath'thong arrived from Amazon.

For the greater good...

Welcome

As for news, we try to update things here frequently but the best place is probably the STAW forum over on boardgamegeek.com

OP previews have been passed through various YouTube hosts, but the latest I have heard from regionals is that startrek.com will now be doing all WK previews. Startrek.com used to just do the new retail ship previews but it looks like they are doing it all right now. My personal theory is that with the new show and movie coming up CBS/Paramount is flexing the mussels of their license, the Axanar law suit being a perfect example.

WK usually puts all of the previews up on their Attack Wing page a day or two after startrek.com

Nice to see another Romulan player in out midst The Valdor will be a big boost to you. The Scimitar, Hakonna, and Praetus should be prime on your buy list. Apnex has a great tech in the Interphase Generator. If you don't mind going on the secondary market for OP ships Avatar of Tomed and the Vorta Vor nice.

Unless you are a die hard collector like me and Corpsman you could hold off on the Talvath, Vo, Pi, and Jazkal. The are fun ships but not essential for beginners.

Welcome! I second Mr. Baldrick: The Hakonna and Valdore are serious must haves. The Praetus is the ship carrying cloaked mines, the Hakonna has a lot of amazing generic crew, and the Valdore adds some much needed firepower to the non-Reman ships.

The Scimitar has a lot of fun tech available, but a decent portion of the pack is limited to only the Reman Warbird. But, that's not a huge deal since the Reman is one of the absolute best ships in the game.

For the limiting ship classes, I am starting off with limiting Fighters to heavy cruiser or higher, as well as only one super dreadnought period, and one dreadnought per 100 points. I think it will force players to focus on quality builds versus massing a fleet of Reman warbirds...

Well from the rumors that were flying around regionals there are big changes coming with wave 24 who knows what that means. As for the release schedule check out this

The mods over on BGG put this together from the solicits sent out by the distributors. But by the looks of things wave 24 has been pushed back to May and then every other month after that. Some ships have been taken out of the release schedule and are just listed as TBA There are some older ships that are being re-released (USS Ent, Voyager, Neg'Var, Ent E, Scimitar). According to the solicits these ships will come with new skus, and SOME "updated cards". Now is this just time token torpedoes or actual rewrites who knows

So we have to wait and see, if the usual pattern is to be used previews for the May release will be some time next month according to the list on BGG wave 24 is

Re-release USS Enterprise
IKS Drovana
IRW Algeron

The preview for Enterprise will give us our first look at what "updated cards" means. Here is hoping. Though I am ticked because the IRW Devoras and IKS Klothos are now TBA

Why do you say that?

WK may be shaking up the release schedule, but the game is in no danger of going anywhere. I never minded it but folks have been asking for ever other month releases for some time. That's how it started until wave 5, then it went to every month.

I am just ticked about the rescheduling and uncertainty of some of the new ships. I am very wary of re-releasing "updated" ships, especially if I already have multiple copies of the ship. Wizkids doesn't "Rebalance" things... they have shown little care for maintaining a balanced game. It has been true of their other games, not just attack wing.

So, needless to say, I am very displeased that they have bumped their NEW material for an undetermined time, for the sake of re-releasing cards and ships that are already well received and fine.

I can't help but think with all the repaints coming that we're seeing a stealth 2.0 update, and my past experiences with WK on that front have seen a slow end to the game line. We'll see though, if they are truly just repaints with no card modifications, I'll be eager to see what ships come after.

Hoping for a USS Centaur.

We just ran a fun little "Race" scenario that got pretty cutthroat. And I forgot to take pictures again. Basically, standard table with Tholian Web marking out a "race course" with satellites, asteroids, gun satellites, a Borg Sphere, and a Borg Cube all shooting at the racers. Oh, and random events every turn. If you hit the web, you stop and take 2 damage. And we couldn't attack each other directly, unless we were in range of specific obstacles. What else? There was a Worm Hole, and a couple planets with heavy gravity that you could sling shot around. Oh yeah! Single ship with < 3 hull, single faction, 40 points. We all got the "Skilled Helmsan" or the other S-shaped resource for free. Fun time- an Oberath Fed ship won. I played an Assimilated B'Rel with Assimulation Tubules. I basically kept stealing everyone Else's upgrades. Had 8 of us on the table and had a great time.

We are running The Void here in a couple weeks. Then after that is The Doomsday Machine. I'm still up in the air about sourcing out for a couple 3d Printed Doomsday Machines or making my own out of toilet paper rolls and tin foil (with a LED light in it too). For the Doomsday Machine, I really want to run the Decker Boys- Matt and Will for some fun shenanigans "AH! I killed my crew!" "You can't fire phasers at warp speed!" We might have to beef up the Doomsday Machine though. We are thinking that the only way to hurt the Doomsday Machine is for your entire ship's base to be within the 90 degree front arc of the Doomsday machine. We might have to do a little play testing first...

I'm really looking forward to The Wrath of Khan. I really, really want that Khan and an Independent Reliant. Looks like that won't happen until May for me. :/

I am ok with them re releasing ships especially the really popular ones, lets face it if you want another Dorsal Phaser Array right now you have to pay big $$ on eBay. I though the old paint jobs were fine, so I'm not interested in that. Now I will say there are a few cards in each of those packs that are not quite worth their points, so I wouldn't mind WK tinkering with them a little in points or some corrected wording. I doubt they would overhaul too much, most of the rumors I hear are just Time Token Torps and some cleaning of the the text, ie Thaleron Weapon.

I don't see the game coming to an end any time soon. I'm sure everything announced will be reworked into the schedule. Last year at GAMA STAW was still bringing in 17% of WK over all profit and that was right before the Borg changes when the game was at its lowest. Wk doesn't want to lose that when their pre release projections only had STAW being 10% of overall profits.

Yeah, that surprised me. I posted the jpg from the wiki showing the various waves in another thread and from one week to the next the releases from the first 4-5 months that followed the monthly pattern from the beginning were spread out over the whole year. I think though that the game would have benefited from a more sane release schedule in the first place. Something like quarterly ships but more value in each. For instance, the Nx-01 would should have had the cards/upgrades for the enterprise and the columbia at least plus a generic... and probably the ISS Avenger and ISS Enterprise as well although I could see that pair (plus a Terran Empire generic) be a separate release. The constant rehash of the same mediocre sculpts and paint jobs didn't help them in the long term.

Hey ho, I'm a long time lurker on Dakka and after I saw Mr. Baldricks dedication to keep our own STAW part on dakkadakka I finally registered and thought, I'll do my part to keep this community alive here .

I'm looking forward to use my Romulans next week once again. I finally got hold of the Harkonna and think I have a decent sized fleet by now. I must say I don't really care about tournament format and prefer larger games, I have 5 different Warbirds now and want to see them on the battlefield .

Been practicing for Wrath of Kahn. Been playing online mostly with my friend. It's nice when we can just go online and play. We are still trying to get all the cards finished but most everything is up to date. He made a really good klingon fleet and has been kicking my butt with it in the nebula. I've thrown Kazon, Romulan and Borg at him and he does pretty well with it.

Just download Table Top Simulator from Steam located here - http://store.steampowered.com/app/286160/

It's $20 right now but sometimes they have a sale. But if you get it we can play once again! :-)

Hello, I've been away for...a while.

Happenings in STAW around here are that we have had to drop down to every other week for events, and our shop somehow never managed to get the OP kit for the third Xindi OP.

The most recent lists I've run that have actually won anything were an all Gorn, all the time list and a Galor spam list. Took a couple of good captains, and 4 Galor class ships (Reklar, Kraxon (ok, this might be false, I get the K names mixed up), and two Borg versions).

Every Xindi OP we've done I've managed to get the Ferengi ship for a blind. :/ I love the Ferengi, but they're just not good enough, and it's added nothing to my list.

We're supposed to do a triple blind event in the next few weeks. One blind each from the Borg, Dominion, and Xindi sets. Should be fun (though I'm likely to get two Ferengi ships out of it!).

The triple blind OP sounds like a lot of fun such an awsome idea, I may have to steal recommend it for my local store.

I can sort of feel your pain on the 4 Ferengi blinds. Way back in the Collective OP I got the B'Moth 3 times in a row. It was the best ship in that set but it is disappointing to get the same over and over. After Regionals I have a new found respect for Nunk's Marauder. Geodesic Pulse saved my bacon a few times and kept me in a game long enough to have Dukat running from a Ferengi I still lost that game by 1 hull point but it was absolutely worth it to see another player concerned about a Ferengi ship.

I would like to hear more about this all Gorn list you speak of sounds "fascinating"

Galors are surprisingly good ships. I took two of the borg ones with Mag Charges to Regionals and did well. As it turned out I didn't need to use the Mag charges very much. The180 with 5 base attacks makes them a beast.

Yep, I like variety! The worst part is when I have a 1/10 chance of getting that ship, and it's still the one I get :/ Oh, well, at least I now have 8 Ferengi ships...

Nunk's Marauder is pretty good, but my biggest beef with the Ferengi is that they're neither durable, nor hard hitting (barring shenanigans/action economy that isn't there). I generally want my ships to be doing one of those two things. However, they have a lot of neat stuff.

Gorns...well, from what I can recall, it was three Gorn ships (the two named and one unnamed one) with the three Gorn captains, and all with the Tech upgrade that lets you add an evade as long as you have tokens. I forget what my blind was for that OP. Basically, the ability to convert attack dice without even taking actions is really nice. Unfortunately, this is something that Hirogens actually do a lot better since they do the same thing at CS6, with 4 dice, and without being unique.

But it was fun! And I definitely had some upgrades I'm forgetting, but Sess'lak is the real deal.

Hey guys I did get some news from my local store yesterday. The cost of OPs could be going down after the classic movie series. Starting with Tin Man the cost of the kit from the distributor will be $6, they are currently $24. So if your store doesn't use the blinds or charges you extra to cover the OP kit your cost should go down in a few months. Personally I think this should have been done once WK stopped including models in the prize pack, but as I tell my kids life isn't fair.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

I agree, Ferengi need a little more. In TNG they said the Marauder was a match for the Enterprise and this definitely is not reflected in the game. I say it needs one more hull and 1 more attack and then they have a decent building block.

For home games we have talked about rewriting Maximum Shields (from the Kreechta) to be the Ferengi equivalent to Unimatrix Shielding. The Feds should NOT have the lone market on shield upgrades. Every faction doesn't need 3 of them but WK should throw the other factions a bone now and again.

Yes, that would be about right. They might even be able to take out other ships at that point. Especially with their shenanigans Right now, I guess Quark could smuggle type 8s on it, but I can't really think of too many other options (we tend to play 'penalty-free').

They are certainly getting close, I think. My biggest beef is that there's now 4 of the same class ship. The only other ship they have is a shuttle. Now, if they had upgrades that upgrade their shields/attack like you're talking about, then we're cooking with gas. I like that idea. I might have to float that around my group.

Oh, another idea you might like: we've run a few events where the 'entry fee' was buying one of the retail ships, building a 40-point 'blind' out of that, then you randomly get one of the blinds someone else built. At the end of the night, you keep the ship you bought.
