Am I correct in my belief that Cityfight is the more up-to-date version of Cities of Death? Are either applicable to 7th ed?

Other way around. Cityfight came out before Cities of Death. I don't know if they're applicable.

Cityfight was the first out in late 3rd, 4th ed.

Cities of Death came out in 5th.

There's up to date rules for Cityfighting in Shield of Baal: Leviathan or as a seperate ebook from Black Library.

its not rules really, its basically been gimped into malestrom of war with vanguard strike deployment with some minor alterations.

if i was to go back and rework cities of death id make lots of changes to it because its kind of depressing how devoid of a difference to regular 40k it is

Hmm it's not that different. The current line of sight rules came from the old cityfight and if you want Stratagems you can still use the old ones mostly, even the missions can be made to work.

The fact is with 7th edition, you don't really need any additional, city specific, rules.

The Shield of Baal Maelstrom cards are actually lots of fun fyi. Also FW:HH-book4(Conquest) has some cool Cityfight missions with some extra rules for flavor.
