Do they have dreadnoughts/helbrutes? I feel like if they did they must be rubric dreadnoughts, moreover rubric contemptor dreadnoughts that have survived the long war... ...unless they've found a way to make new rubric dreadnoughts? Might they have any Sorcerer dreadnoughts? I can't imagine why they would, since Sorcerers seem to be excellent when it comes to keeping themselves alive and well (in one way or another)

Do they make new Rubric Marines? How?

What do they man their vehicles with? Rubricae? Sorcerers? A Sorcerer sitting shotgun to a Rubric driver as he casts spells out the window does sound pretty bitchin'. That should be a new unit! (But is this how it is in the official lore?)

Do Rubricae use havoc weapons? Can they use jump packs? Chainswords? Are there melee Rubric Marines? What variations of Rubric Marines are/aren't there?

I'm sure Rubric Terminators are implied in the lore, but there just aren't any models for them, right?

Are the Thousand Sons fans of summoning daemons?

Do the Thousand Sons prefer to ally with other warbands or work alone?

If they do prefer to ally with other warbands, do they have any particular friends or enemies?

Do they have any special units that aren't even anything like what's in the Chaos Space Marines codex?

Any other special details or nuances?

Wow. Those are some nice-looking bits.

the Thousand Sons don't make new Rubric warriors. The rubric was a 1-time spell cast to stop mutation in weaker members of the existing thousand son marines. The remaining Thousand Sons that were not affected by the rubric have the ability to control the Rubric marines via sorcery/telepathy/whatever.

There might be rubric dreadnaughts or terminators but I think that would be rare as I get the impression the rubric only impacted the weakest of the Thousand Sons and generally terminators and dreadnaughts are reserved for exceptional marines. I would guess if there are any dreadnaughts they may likely be sorcerer dreadnaughts although most chaos dreadnaughts are completely insane so I would think even among the thousand sons a sane dreadnaught would be rare but who knows.

Also its rare for more than a few thousand son sorcerers to be together and it takes great events or powerful people to band more than a few together for any length of time. In the fluff I've read it's usually a lone sorcerer with a few rubric marines either leading a chaos warband or working directly for a chaos warlord. Major events, like Ahriman invading the Planet of Sorcerers or a Black Crusade will draw additional Thousand Sons together but they always break apart with infighting.

I'd say if you wanted to make a 40K fluff Thousand Sons army it would include one or two sorcerers (perhaps Ahriman as HQ) and a Chaos Space Marine Lord. Perhaps a few minor Tzeench demons and some rubric marines and then some normal Chaos marines of some persuasion or another. I'd paint them up differently to represent different warbands working together (however briefly)

That lines up with what I've read. Any ideas for allied CSM? Is it usually warbands that are destitute?

I would guess they would allie with anyone that allowed them to further there goals.

I know they work with Black Legion a handful of times to help Abby further his crusade.

Rubricae don't get anything special rules wise i.e. jump packs, heavy weapons, etc.

The old 3.5 or 4th ed dex gave alot of interesting options for 1K sons (but all the gods did in that book). Also back in 3rd edition they did introduce cult terminators in the Chapter Approved book. Thousand Sons termis got 2 wounds at that time but couldn't change their weapon loadout and the aspiring champion was a sorcerer.

Best way to play TS in 40k? Use the GK codex. The 40k rules/support for legion troops is awful.

Would gift of mutation work? Part of me thinks it isn't fluffy cos of the rubric, but on the other hand it is one of the few options the Aspiring Sorcerors can select.

Yeah, that's pretty un-fluffy, given that the Rubric's whole purpose was to eliminate mutations. 1k Sons and the current tabletop don't mix well together.

im also going to be making 1k sons but I can't find a sorcerer model I like nor a conversion thats worth really painting well. Ahriman is really cool but hard to get in metal as well as in good shape

finecast in general is so depressingly bad

EvilCraft has a sorcerer model I really like (though have yet to purchase). Their whole CSM product line is ridiculously detailed.

a few things:

1) thousand sons had a super small vehicle armory to begin with

2) magnusite Thousand sons are red, and don't leave the eye or terror very often (like, they've left once or twice in the last 10,000 years

3) Ahriman and his buddies are the blue dudes, and not all TS are rubricae, there was a (albeit small) percentage that were still hardly psykers, but still had flesh.

Source: Lots of books (drawing blanks atm) and years of being a TS fanboy

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Codex: Grey Knights
Codex: Chaos Space Marines
Codex: Chaos Space Marines allied with Daemons
Codex: Crimson Slaughter

Red Rubricae = Magus
Blue Rubricae = Ahriman
Black Rubricae = Iskandar Khayon (Not official/confirmed, Black Legion Thousand Sons)

Troops - Thousand Sons with Aspiring Sorcerer in squads of 9

Mark of Nurgle on units increases toughness in line with Rubric in fluff (Invulnerable save doesn't give the impression of unstoppable tough units that shrug off wounds)
Alternatively Mark of Slaanesh with Icon for FNP rolls. Mark of Tzeentch only really worth it on Terminators and Daemon Princes

Avoid chaos spawn OR embrace them as fallen brothers (The Change)

Sorcerer HQs / Ahriman

Mock up havocs (buy Space Marine Dev squads and convert) and normal tactical marines - use standard loadouts for Heresy era marines
Cultists have a place - Spire Guard (See Battle of the Fang)

Think vanilla marines with lots of sorcerers - a bit like Blood Ravens (spoiler alert)
