Sorry just want to vent. I'm so tired of the insular BS that is coming from the LGS. It's about 3 hours away from any other community of noteworthy size and if they aren't changing games ever 2-3 months, they are going back to 40k, they are completely blowing off any highly reviewed game if one or two of the local pariah show interest (which includes Warmachine/Hordes, Malifaux, Guildball, Infinity, and Flames of War). Honestly I don't see how the place is staying open because it takes them months to get in special orders .I would just go hang out with the local board game community but my job sends me out of town on the one weekend a month they met like clockwork. We have had 2 other shops try to open up but both of them had horrible business sense and the one that is left, from what I have heard won't be open for much longer. It's so bad even they MtG and card game crowd has opened up their own place.

Edit: my location is no longer correct but for this rant it's better I don't correct it.

The News and Rumors section is all about surprises. I'd certainly hate it if we got 100 posts saying "I know something you don't know..." - malfred

You basically need to show them what they're missing, with the idea being that you should just ignore them if they won't ever switch. At that point, they're not a solution or a goal, but rather an obstacle to bypass.

It's difficulty, but having two full armies, fully painted, and terrain to match the game is a definitely help. It seems counter-intuitive to put so much effort into a game you're not sure people will play, but you're much more likely to find players in or outside this group if you do. Good games are just that, good enough to gain an audience of their own.

Start your own club in the area that's not store specific. You'll have to do some setup work and recruiting, including finding a neutral play space, but it is possible. Community Centers often have large spaces and lots of tables that are cheap to rent.

But, you will have to keep it friendly. Never let frustrations show, and instead keep playing, keep inviting people to play. Never insult their game and don't be obnoxious.

Building a gaming community takes time, so be prepared.

This right here. I don't start a game anymore unless I know I can personally buy Red v. Blue for that system. That way I am not looking for an opponent with an army, I am looking for an opponent willing to play a game with zero financial input. It may mean some games I don't play...if I didn't have 40K armies already, it is likely I never would. But second hand swap sites, people getting out or scaling down are great places to pick them up. Some systems I have more than one, but for the last 5 years it has been a personal requirement to have two forces of any system.

Being a gaming evangelist in the wilderness can be fun...until it isn't. Buying, building, painting both sides and having to lasso people in to demonstrate loses its appeal after awhile.

If you can find ONE reliable opponent who you get along with, that's really all you need. Realize that to get that one opponent you will likely need to play his/her preferred game, too---unless you've both stumbled into your mutual favorite.

This right here. You talk about if 1 or 2 pariahs get into a game. Well, you only need 2 pariahs, then you'll both have someone to game against. If you stick to it, you might build up interest for others. If not, you at last get to play a game you want to play with that other person. If the store scene shifts to another game, speak to that person to see if they want to just stick with it. You might find there's a bit of a herd mentality going on when a few influential people shift games, the rest follow. There might be some who want to stick with a game the rest have moved on from.
