There were rumors last year that GW would release expansions for their board games in White Dwarf and after rules for a Daemon Prince in Execution Force and Daemons in BaC, they are now adding Stormtroopers (Tempestus Scions) to Deathwatch: Overkill. There is also a new mission in the same issue (114).

If I had to guess, I'd assume the Inquisitor's investigation was doomed because he showed up with a dude waving a giant flag that gave them away.

Potentially cool idea for rules though. Though I haven't played the original yet. I'm just converting all the Genestealer Cultists.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

That's really cool. Finding a way to use existing models into existing games. Nice job, GW.

Must be a new owner

Hopefully they do this for more armies.

Edit: I am really hoping for other armies to put the Deathwatch against. Like Orks or Dark Eldar.

Eldar/Dark Eldar would be sweet. I'd be all over that like white on rice.

Indeed. I would get a small force of Eldar and Orks to play this game with. If they made expansions that were basically the Start Collecting boxes with the cards for DW:O, I would buy every army available.

I have no desire to start full-blown armies of either of these factions, but I would love to have a small force to paint that actually served a purpose.

I hope the formation for 40k is competitive for the IG they need some help. I also think its cool DW expands.

Oh my goodness do you think this means we'll see the Tau Voidsuit they use in boarding spacehulks? It was mentioned/created by FFG for their Deathwatch line. It's the Tau equivalent to Terminator armor at least in size.

Make it so.

Have played it. Quite enjoyed it. It seems easy enough on the surface, but when you start playing against someone who has experienced playing both sides the Genestealer Cultists can become quite nasty.

How many boxes of Scions would I need to make this doable is the big question in my mind.

I've wanted to get some just to try painting some, but if I need 3 or 4 boxes worth... I don't know.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

You're probably looking at just two boxes of Scions. They probably want to keep it at 10 or 11 versus the Genestealer Cultists.

The setup is probably 10 Scions and the Inquisitor.

I like this a lot. The Deathwatch seemed like well....overkill! This actually makes the game seem like it would make sense as far as the background is concerned (pretty sure the marines could have just walked in there unarmed and easily dispatched all of the GS cult).

This is tempting me more and more to get overkill, that and the fact I want a GSC.

Hopefully the first of a few 'expansions'... if they don't bring GSC fully into 40k as a fully supported codex, then it may be interesting if they release additional models for this as standalones with tack-on 40k rules... Kinda like expansion packs for Overkill GSC of more monopose stuff. Obviously 40k releases with DWOK rules would be ideal but I'd take the other way around if they use smaller releases to gauge interest.

There's actually a bit of background in the Deathwatch mission book as to why the Kill-Team is there and how they operate.

The jist is that an Inquisitorial Stormtrooper team went in first, then went missing.
After that, a small Deathwatch Kill-Team was authorized and sent in. They also went missing.

Cassius kinda/sorta goes rogue and organizes a Kill-Team to go retrieve/avenge the fallen Deathwatch and things spiral wildly from there.

Also worth noting that in almost all of the Deathwatch missions, you're not using the full Kill-Team. It's not until towards the end that you use all of them.

I'm still not changing my signature, but I am very impressed this year with GW.

I have also watched the game played and was pleasantly surprised. Enough to ask for a copy when restocked.

We've played 6 of the 9 missions. Planning to complete the campaign this weekend. The marines play like fluff marines and are easier IMHO to learn with--at least the first 3-4 missions. After that, the GSC amps up the hurt. They get to bring nasty HQs, purestrans (eat marines in one attack when they normally are darn near impossible to kill).

The final mission has the GSC in its throne room lair. The patriarch can zap a marine each turn, regardless of where the marine is located. And I the patriarch is on his throne he regenerated AND cannot be targeted farther than 2 inches away. The marine player gets to field all 11 of his guys for that mission but doesn't get to heal and has to conserve ammo as well. It's going to be a nasty fight

Last, I'm looking forward to this IG expansion. This is what I was hoping for with BaC since it has an even more solid game engine IMO. Either way I'd much rather play in the 40k universe using these boardgames than trying to get back into a new edition.

:( Now I regret selling off the GSC models and keeping just the Deathwatch. Another reason I want them to release rules for other xenos armies for the DW to go up against.

Honestly, that's kinda difficult for the boardgame.

Genestealer Cults are really the only option for the boardgame's setting--but that's why the rules for 40k actually work better for any other race. Make up a mission with objectives and go hogwild in 40k proper using the Kill-Team rules.
