Background

I am just getting back into 40k and I though I would seek some advice from people that have been playing the last few editions, thanks all in advance. The last time I played was in 3rd maybe 4th edition. Currently I am dusting off my old models and I am stripping a lot of them, repainting and converting plus painting a few new things I bought recently (a centurion pack cause they aesthetically look awesome and some drop pods, because game wise they seem practical).
I wanted to create an unusual army that I can write interesting fluff for. Thus, it will be Legion of the Damned (LOTD) with a predominately soldier heavy Iron hands army.
I have read the rules and googled a lot on using LOTD as a primary detachment but some rules have alluded me. Hence, the first question.

Questions:
I am a little bit confused on how to use LOTD as a primary. I get that they can take 1 unit as a HQ (Sergeant is then the warlord) and up to 3 optional units of LOTD to complete the primary detachment (all count as scoring). However, it is with the Allied detachment it has stumped me.
1. If I take my Iron Hands as my secondary (allied) detachment am I restricted to only 1 HQ 1 troop min (additionally 1 Elite, 1 Troop, 1 Fast Attack and 1 Heavy)?
2. If that is the case can I just switch my Iron hands to primary and make my LOTD allied (obviously the LOTD units will then not be scoring) and then is the list still legal?
3. In regards to the list, I am going for an army that I can write interesting fluff for (eg Iron hands with predominately no vehicles, saved by the LOTD. I am open to vehicle suggestions, I have a lot of dreads, predators, vindicators etc (my main army in 3rd/4th was Iron hands), the list is just what I was planning on stripping and converting first and making fluffy) but could the list be viable in a tournament, do you think so (practically wise over fluff)? Suggestions?
4. Fliers are a bit of a concern (never played against). For that I was thinking of either dropping some points (plasma pistol on my HQ LOTD serg etc) to add some flakk missiles into my devastators or dropping my Heavy bolter Devastator squad for a stalker etc (however, I like the heavy bolter models and it does not fit to much in the theme).

Cheers all for taking the time to read and suggestions.

Hi there I'm going to bump your thread although cannot add much.

Here is what I can add:

Fliers came in as a horribly priced and terribly unbalanced addition for early 6th. I went to one tournament in 6th and did not play for several years after, the meta figured them out real quick and spammed them - they became leafblower lists, ie you got blown off the table. Some armies needed to ally in fliers, ie marines needed IG. Worse still was the way it was handled, you had to buy the minis but also the supplement for fliers, then they rolled to codex after everyone had bought the supplement and it all had become obsolete.

Fluff always drives enjoyment. The enjoyment of 8x bike troops all carrying the same weapon is pretty shallow and is not going to give much pleasure after its been done. Worse still the feeling you get when you have hosed some poor kid at a tournament with your tecnhicians list is pretty bitter. Build the list you love, that tells the story you want to play. If someone brings a meta optimised list to a tournament then take the beating, optimised lists tend to have glaring weaknesses that some other army will exploit. Alternatively everyone at a tournament has everyone else figured out if you read between the lines.

Welcome back to the game, I will defer to someone else to help with allies (I never used them), with luck Nevelon will swing by this thread, and happy hobbying.

As a Firehawks and Iron Hands player, i would suggest you also look into the Forgeworld Badab chapters at the firehawks. Theyre pretty damn sweet and I went with the fluff. Essentially the Legion of the Damned can be over priced but a total FnP army is quite durable. I would run an IC like smashfucker in with the legion to soak up wounds with Art armour and gives them some CC options. As well, consider taking advantage of the Iron Hands CT for repairing mechs and Char. models.

Most certainly max min is the new cheese. but After going to adepticon, there isnt a damned thing anyone can do about 3x Riptides and 2x wraithknights with a VSG in area terrain while being shrouded in an AOE bubble with invisibility. No joke that was 75/184 lists were exactly that. You just cant deal with it unles you nid rush.
