Hi all,

I'm planning on giving the White scars hunting force formation a try but I'm not sure about one thing; it says you need to bring a captain but can that captain be upgraded to a chapter master or does he have to stay as a captain?

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

People will argue over that.

If the chapter master is an optional upgrade for the captain and is listed in the captain's ALE, quite a few will say he can be upgraded to be a chapter master.

If a chapter master is an entirely different unit with a different ALE the answer is no, he must be a captain.

It's definitely an optional upgrade. In the Captain's ALE it says he may be upgraded to a chapter master. I just thought I'd run it by Dakka because I tried to make a list with the hunting force using battlescribe and it wouldn't let me upgrade him to a chapter master. Then again, it wouldn't let me give a captain artificer armour either...

Then the answer is the following:

Some will say you changed the name of the model and thus the captain is no longer a captain.

Some will say since it's an optional upgrade, it can be taken just as surely as a melta bomb can.

I agree with the latter, but I think a RAI exception should be made for instances in which the formation lists something like "1 dreadnought" whereas an additional dreadnought can be purchased as an upgrade from the "dreadnought" ALE. I personally think they meant those formations to only include one of them. But that's HIWPI.

Yes, you may upgrade your captain to a chapter master.

The argument that you can't do this would rule out putting flamers on tactical squads as well.

Formation rules tell you they refer to datasheets or army list entries, not specific models. Thus you gain the options from the army list entry as you ordinarily would, unless stated otherwise.

As above. Raw you can upgrade him, as the ALE never changes.
