So I finally parted with some of my hard earned cash and bought a 5 man Stormboyz squad. I LOVE the fluff for these little guys, I love the way they look, the rules seem pretty good (for orks), however I can't see me using them in any game until I get at least 10 of them (They are just boyz after all with that wonderful 6+ armor save). So I have a couple of questions for this community

1: Ork Players: Are Stormboyz fun and worth taking in friendly games/semi competitive games?
2: All Other Armies: When you see stormboyz in your opponents army do you actually worry about them at all or do you see them as an easy kill point and a waste of points?

1. Fun yes but worth taking? It depends on terrain honestly. A barren board is no play to bring stomrboys but LoS blocking terrain in the midfield lets these boyz jump over and make a rather long charge in turn 2 if needed. They can dart around the backfield grabbing objectives in maelstrom missions or deepstrike in/arrive from reserves to show up later in the game when hopefully the enemy has throw its big punches already.

2. More points effective to shoot than boyz on foot but not generally a top priority if the Ork army has multiple fast moving threats like trukk meganobz/tankbustas/burnas, warbikers, battlewagons, etc. I wouldn't worry about them if more pressing matters where at hand.

Armies (7th edition points)
7000+ Points Death Skullz
4000 Points
+ + 3000 Points "The Fiery Heart of the Emperor"
3500 Points "Void Kraken" Space Marines
3000 Points "Bard's Booze Cruise"

Stormboyz are pretty fun. I've ran them when my brother has let me use his Ork army for some friendly games at the local GW.

They're best run in large amounts and/or with Zagstruk though.
If you save up for a bit, you can get yourself Da Vulcha Skwad boxed set. It's a formation in Waagh! Ghazghkull which lets you run them as a single massed unit.

The box consists of three boxes of Storm Boyz @$25 each and Zagstruk @$22.25 for $85. It doesn't save you much($97.25 retail for the individual components, $85 for the box--saves you $12.25) but it does save you enough that you're almost halfway(short .25 cents to be the halfway mark!) towards ANOTHER box of Stormboyz if you wanted it.

They are not the most point efficient models since they die as fast as regular boyz and are just as good as them in close combat.

But I still love them, they are really fast you just have to keep them out of line of sight or keep their squad size low and use them as suicide kanopener squads

The da vulcha squad is an interesting formation . The 3 units don't have to be attached together, but let's be honest, unless they are going MSU they should be in large squad.

MSU benefits: with the deepstrike only d6 they are quite acurate, great for some 2nd turn objective scoring, and late game linebreaker. They also can tie up enemy units turn 3 for use full harassment (probably don't get them any nobz or upgrades if you want to go msu, the ghaz mobrule is horible, don't bother with a bp, and just let them run, they were cheap and probably did what they were supposed to do.
Used msu vulcha squad once against my brother's tau. I had a lot of other threats on the board and so the we're barely shot at, and the rest of the game they tide up his units in combat. I tied the game and they were instrumental to that.

For a large combined squad: the d6 deepstrike (they have to deepstrike) helps in keeping a large squad from misshap, and thus more useful then a normal squad of 30 deepstriking stormboyz. The megasquad is also a great way to bring 3 nobz with pk in a single boy squad, Haveing better dmg output for little tax on normal boyz. If you have at least 30 in the formation you can handle the perils of the ghaz mobrule better. If doing a large squad I suggest doing either 30 to more to make it useful (though the max of 90 is very klunky with deepstrike, easier to misshap). If zag is your warlord you can reroll moral within six of him, but if you want speed then do a normal warboss as warlord for waaaghing stromboyz.
I'll be trying my next few games with a 30 man strong vulcha squad combined formation with 3 nobz with pks. I know at a higher number they will be more vulnerable, but I have plans to have a bike mek with kff running to cover them with an invul, and if I think they are threatened even more I'll have a painboy on bike run up and join the squad, this would provide 2 separate 5up saves that can keep them from getting blasted away. I'm looking forward to using the formation like this...though I'm not expecting too much, it could very well blow up in my face..at least I didn't pay much for my stromboyz (I scratch built them from normal boyz, this thread shows them off http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/685059.page#8550937)

In regards to the Vulcha sqwad I don't like it, i read the new rulebook at my local store ( I refuse to buy it)

Deep striking 30-60 Stormboyz in one unit seems rather....dangerous. If the enemy has even 1 pie plate with AP6 or better your going to lose a LOT of those boyz. And even without a pie plate you just made a gigantic, expensive target for the enemy to kill with massed RoF and focus firing. I know as an ork player if my opponent did this to me I would shoot the crap out of it and then assault it and tie it up in combat with their S3 attacks against my S4 (for the 1st turn).

If I field these guys I was planning on several small units with a nob/pk. so 4 Stormboyz and a nob with PK for 80 pts

So in two horde detachments I would have 6 units of 5 Stormboyz with nobz/PKs and 6 units of Trukk Boyz with a nob PK and a couple points left over for Warboss with PK and Da Finkin Cap, a Painboy and 7 Tankbustas also in a trukk.

So 7 Trukkz and 6 units of stormboyz for 13 MSU threats Not highly competitive but rather speedy and orky I think.

Either way, the reason I linked that box is because it saves you a bit of money and gets you a great looking character.
