My best friend is huge into 40k, and for his birthday got the day off to try to play all day. So I thought Id take the time to write a narrative campaign, escalation style, with 4 games 850, 1000, 1500, 2000. I want some custom mission types which can include maelstrom elements but I want them to be fair, balanced, and fun. So what are the coolest missions you've played so I can find some fun ones to give him.

I think the most narrative story I have done is when Necrons Teamed up with Eldar in a 30K vs 30K point game against IG, Salamanders, IK's, and Space Wolves. The Necron warlord was the Crazy special character who sees all other races as splinter factions of necrons (cant remember his name right now). The story was that even though he saw the eldar as splinter faction necrons he was still going to help his "brothers" against the IoM.

I find stronghold assault missions are quite good for an escalation style narrative campaign.

I personally love the Stronghold Assault book

I had a cool escalation style campaign once, AM vs Orks. Both were mechanized lists.

End of The World

Game 1: Recon. Owning a table quarter = 1 VP.
Game 2: Capture the objectives. The objectives were our own vehicles! We had to capture them in order to use them. (Or capture the opponents to turn their own vehicles against them! Orks in Leman Russ's, guard in battlewagons, good stuff.) Recon winner got to assign infiltrate to D3 units.
Game 3: King of the Hill. The world is about to end, and there's only one shuttle left! Recon winner gets D3 infiltrate again, objective winner get D3 free fortifications. Winner is the side holding the shuttle in the middle when the game randomly ends.

You can figure out another couple games to throw in to bring it up to five of course.

Those are all pretty awesome. I love the objective based one too. Im shooting for Wolves vs AM. As Wolves try to secure the newly found Wulfen a misunderstanding leads the AM to believe the Wolves are chaos tainted and the Wolves fight back to defend their brothers. So something like that with wulfen would work great
