Since the forum reorg turned this into a Kings of War only board, and the combined Mantic paint thread that catered for KoW stuff has been moved to the Misc games board, I figured I'd restart it here with my newest from the last thread

Ogre Captain on 'chariot', which is a DeeZee woolly rhino, with a magnetised arm to switch between shield and crossbow

And here's the rest of the army that's been completed to date

Post away! Paint away!

I agree, those Japanese minis are really cool

Yep, those Reaper Hill Giants are being used as Giants, and to me it was good fortune that their clothes and shoulder pauldrons really matched up visually with the Mantic Ogres. I certainly didn't buy them in the KS with that in mind!

Yep! The second regiment I'm doing right now is working on the vittles, while the proposed third will continue the wagon train, and fourth I'm not sure yet, tents are a possibility.

Thanks! I'm not a great painter, but I think the secret with those Goblins is:

  • Don't go looking for detail that isn't there

  • Pick a few good, contrasting block colours

  • Make liberal use of washes to grab what detail there is

  • Have a good multibase theme

  • Then let the mass of them together at tabletop distance, and the story the base theme tells, fill in the gaps in your visual experience

Fancy! I always did like the Gondor helmets in the movies. Reminds me, I need to do a state of the army photo, I was just hoping to complete a couple more things first.

Would terrain made for Mantic stuff count? I've got a lot of ruined medieval city terrain I'm working on atm I could post.

If it's made for KoW, then sure, why not? Stick a KoW unit nextto it in a photo just to be sure though

Now I just need to find players in my area...

I know that feeling! I've gotten to play 8 games in total, by driving about 90 minutes north in the wee hours of the morning to reach two tournaments that were run by a club up there.

Yeah the DeeZee woolly rhinos fit very nicely on the 50x100 chariot base, as does the Acheson Creations mammoth. I also have a DeeZee mammoth, and Acheson Brontotherium, Paraceratherium, and Deinotherium that fit just nicely too.

I like your weapon swaps! Blue Ogres with snow bases could make a good themed allies army with the evetual northern alliance force too

The rhinos are 65mm from front foot to rear foot, and that leaves about 17mm of rhino head and horn overhanging the front on the straight one, less on the turned head one.

You could certainly fit some kind of chariot behind it, in a tight fit, but not the Mantic chariot. Definitely check all the laser cut MDF places for carts, buggies and such if you want to stick with it.

My leaders et to ride the big animals, but for my regular chariots I'm planning to replace the boars with smaller prehistoric animals from Acheson - I have 2 each of the Steppes Bison, Daedon, and Aurochs, planning to make one animal to a chariot, and as soon as I get some reliable measurements, probably the Japanese style ox or hand carts from 4Ground.

Acheson makes two different Rhinos, Coelodonta and Elasmotherium, which are priced the same as the Bison/Aurochs/Daedon, but I can't vouch for their size.

Brontotherium is big by the way - it still fits on the chariot base lengthwise, but it's twice the width of the woolly rhinos, and a good 15mm or so taller. It's got real presence, and I plan for it to be my Warlord's ride, as opposed to the captain on the smaller rhino.

I can take a bunch of side by side for scale photos with all my prehistoric animals if you want?

Sticking them in a spoiler cause they're mostly not painted (also big images ) DZ for DeeZee, everything else Acheson

Left to right: Paraceratherium, Deinotherium, Mammoth #1, Mammoth bellowing (DZ), Brontotherium, Woolly Rhino trotting (DZ), Woolly Rhino charging (DZ), Aurochs, Steppe Bison, Daedon, Ogre Standard Bearer

    Spoiler:

Also, in case that sort of thing bothers you, it was pointed out to me elsewhere that the Acheson Paraceratherium is based on an image now considered ahistorical, as more recent studies of the minuscule amount of fossil discoveries have produced a creature looking more like a giant Tapir than a giant long necked Camel.

Np! Acheson has a wealth of really nicely done animal sculpts, for those leaning away from more fantastical creatures in a given army, and DeeZee has some good ones too.

Yep, Paraceratherium is going to be an ogre army standard bearer on chariot, and Deinotherium is going to be a mammoth armed with a ballista. The DeeZee mammoth, I dunno, maybe another normal? I added it to my ebay order without a real reason.

I've been busy painting terrain, so it's been a while (also forgive the extra pomp and pageantry, it's entry requirements for a monthly competition); I turned this

    Spoiler:
    (big image)

1 Paraceratherium by Acheson Creations (28mm)
3 Goblins and 1 Ogre by Mantic (28mm)
    3 crates, 2 barrels, 2 platforms, and a chest by 3T Studios (28mm)
1 Hay Cart, 1 Turnip Cart, and 2 Scorpions by Warbases (28mm)
Muslin, a leftover plastic gubbin from Ikea, some oak dowel, some twine, some skewers, and a bit of paddle pop stick

    into this

Claiming the challenge for my custom scratchbuilt Ogre Army Standard Bearer on Chariot for Kings of War, made from all the different bits in the OP

    Also claiming backstory

A creature seldom seen in the young kingdoms, the Great Rhino is perfectly adapted for life on the Mammoth Steppe. Their long necks allow them to reach the juiciest leaves at the tops of the tallest trees, and spot approaching predators from afar; their long legs allow them to easily walk over the tall grass, moving between the island-like woods that dot the steppes with less effort than a shorter creature forced to push through the dense grass, with the added bonus of not leaving a trench of crushed grass for predators to follow. The Ogres have long recognised the gifts of this creature - the Strider of the Grass Sea in their tongue - and senior Ogres, with their long serving (and surviving) Red Goblin retinue, will utilise them to carry loot and pay back into the Steppe with a strength and speed no wagons can match. When the entire clan is called to war, this otherwise gentle beast often finds a use as well - carrying the largest of the army standards and signals, at a majestic height visible to the entire clan

Nice dorfs! Very nordic, and the stone golems are rad

I've mostly been doing Warpath and terrain stuff the last few months, but just finished a Red Goblin Blaster. It's a Warbases handcart, some 1/144 German bombs from Shapeways, and a Mantic goblin with the bow trimmed down to make a fuse lighter

Grokagamok with an axe from Shapeways, a resin skull from Zinge, and the spare head from a Berserker Braves regiment box. I call him Khaguran.

Boomer Sergeant, with a rotary cannon from Shapeways playing the part of a triple barrel punt gun, a resin skull and flask from Zinge, and the spare head from a second Berserker Braves regiment box.

Mammoth with Ballista. Acheson Creations Deinotherium, 5 Mantic Goblins, Hirst Arts crate, chest, and barrels, and a Ballista and heavily modified War Wagon from Warbases.

Thanks! Painted these guys in December, but lazily only got around to basing them this week

Something about the white really washes out the purple flame. Looks better in person, though still not as good as I'd hoped, I don't think any of my purples were properly bright enough

Was due for a full army shot update too

Slight dilemma, as my camera pics were while the white glue on the base was still wet (was on a competition deadline), and my phone pics of today are washed out because the lights were too bright. You're going to have to picture these with dry glue.

The scouts are Hasslefree multipart goblins on Stonehaven raptors. I painted the raptors to look like the Rainbow Lorikeets I see in the garden and out walking The Warlord on Chariot is regular Mantic, with weapons pieced together from the blades and handles of a bunch of regular 2 handed warrior weapons (plus a Reaper sword blade and a bit of skewer), and the mount is a Brontotherium from Acheson Creations. Sphinx is Reaper Bones, and unless I find something better it'll be a wind themed Beast of Nature, to go along with the Dragon Turtle (fire), and walking shark Karnedge Gorefathom (water) I've already painted, and the earth themed one coming in bones 4.

Shamanic Boudi from Hasslefree, now a Druid for the Froces of Nature

Galadanoth, Elf Sniper from Reaper, now turned Master Hunter, and test subject for my "LRDG X Fremen" Eastern Kindred Elves, aka nomadic desert elves - the concept is LRDG x Fremen, so darker skin, blue eyes, lots of brass and copper, and pink panther cloaks. Still needs basing properly.

Imgur and Google Photos are just about the only ones worth mentioning - Imgur is better for quick sharing to forums, Google is better for storing and organising large cross referenced albums, though both can do either.

There are lots of cool paint jobs on this page

My most recent completion, the giant, magnetised and pinned for alternate parts, aside from the head which just slots onto a rod. The cloak is a little tight and damages the paint taking it on and off, so won't be using it anymore.
