In the Warp, getting trolled by Tactical_Spam, AKA TZEENTCH INCARNATE

I've been steadily working through the long list of things I still have to paint for my Chaos warband, and now I've gotten to one of the illustrious Fallen residing in the warband sitting on my painting station, ready to be painted.

I have no idea how I'm going to paint him, though, so I was wondering how all of you Dakkanaughts have approached these ex-Dark Angels colour-wise

So, in other words, show me your Fallen (and pray the Dark Angels aren't around when you do it)!

most fallen angels i see seem to be similar colours to their loyalist brethren, which makes no sense to me, because
during the heresy the 1st legion wore black armour, so it would make sense that those who turned traitor during the heresy would still have black armour.

Really though I'd go for a really dark green with lots of gold highlights

My first thought was to go for black armour with green edge highlighting, would that work?

Can you show me what you mean?

If it is like a tiny accent of green, that'd be pretty good, maybe even a dark green wash over the black

Tried to photoshop an image I found online, hope this clears things up:

The green would probably be less vibrant than in the picture, but still noticeable enough to make the connection to the current Dark Angel livery.

I think that would look really good with an edge like caliban green or something

I'm working on one right now and a fallen wouldn't have any green at all on him, the Angels only got the green once the fallen fell.

You are almost spot on with the colours. Here is what Cypher looks like according to his dataslate.

Spoiler:

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!

Exactly my thoughts as well.

Fallen = Heresy era Dark Angel. So black armour. The dark green can be added as glazes and/or edge highlights to symbolise a further link to the current Dark Angels. Plus it looks cool. I've seen black armour highlighted with white, grey, silver, blue... and green, too. So why not?

Black armour in my opinion, with grey highlights.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

That's the same technique used on GW's Necrons.

I personally just paint my fallen in forgeworlds excellent pre heresy scheme and slap the forgeworld DA shoulderpads on them.

I have a unit of Chosen to run in the Fallen Champions formation with Cypher, and while they are unfinished, I did already choose to paint them in pre-Heresy black. They'll fit in okay with Cypher that way, since I painted his armor black as well.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
