As per the title.
Just wondering because my mate wanted to create a campaign where my Dark Angels go toe to toe with his Space Wolves, and because he wanted to stay true to the fluff.

Well, you have the whole Horus Heresy thing, which was a minor scuffle ...

Then the Age of Apostasy, The Badab uprising and the most recent one, which just happens to involve the Space Wolves and Dark Angels. Although it's not really a civil war yet.

Chapters also come to blows over certain things from time to time.

There have been a fair few civil wars.

More relevant to you, but the next curse of the wulfen supplement might have exactly what you are after.

and dark angels and space wolves coming to blows happens ALL THE TIME. in fact whenever they meet there is typically a formal honor duel fought, for history reasons.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

True, but as far as I am aware, it's never devolved into an outright chapter vs chapter scuffle though. It's usually a champion vs champion thing.

It doesn't mean that it couldn't happen

There have been incidents where personnel and units of other Marine chapters, Imperial Guard, even Inquisition, have mysteriously disappeared after getting bit too close to Dark Angels operations.

Various regional heresies and rebellions are not uncommon, sometimes involving entire sectors. In fact putting down such unrest is one of the most prevalent duties of Space Marine chapters. So Loyalists fighting each other has plenty of support from lore.

"Since the passing of these two mighty Primarchs the Space Wolves and Dark angels have grown ever further apart. Though they have fought together since, and won may great battles together, their mutual loyalties have done nothing to dispel their enmity. More than once they have fought each other, and suffered greatly as a result." ~ 2nd edition Codex Space Wolves

I'm *think* it was stated long ago that they have gone to war 11 times.

Well there you go

Not sure where this is from but it has the account of the Lion and the Wolf but doesn't actually mention the Chapters fighting

Technically, the Imperium is still in a civil war.

One of the civil wars in the Imperium lasted 900 years!

(hilariously/interestingly, Cypher was allegedly one of the council members of Nova Terra, which basically means the guy took part in ruling half of the Imperium for 900 years.)

I... actually don't know. Help?

Hey, didn't the Space Wolves open fire on Grey Knights for attacking civilians?

Planets rise in rebellion against the Imperium on a near-daily basis. The most-commonly fought opponent of the Imperial Guard are other humans.

Not quite.

It was post Armageddon war, the GK wanted to take out all the IG who were in the battle. SW didn't let them, fighting erupted, the "Months of Shame" were the result.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Months_of_Shame

It is probably the largest civil war since the HH and up until the curse of the Wulfen.

There was also "The Beheading", where the Grand Master of the Assassinorum decided that the Senatorum Imperialis would all look better dead. That started a rather nasty civil war.

No way, the Nova Terra Interregnum and the Age of Apostasy were both way bigger events.

Yea, I've always thought this little fluff nugget is awesome.

And the Angels of Darkness descended on pinions of fire and light... the great and terrible dark angels.
He was not the golden lord. The Emperor will carry us to the stars, but never beyond them. My dreams will be lies, if a golden lord does not rise.

I look to the stars now, with the old scrolls burning runes across my memory. And I see my own hands as I write these words. Erebus and Kor Phaeron speak the truth.

My hands. They, too, are golden.

There's also the Severan Dominate, which has taken up an entire space Sector. It's a three way brawl between the Imperial Guard, Severan troops, and Orks.

A better question would be: Has there ever NOT been some kind of civil war or another going on in the Imperium?

Seriously.

I agree with fallinq.

I civil war could be anything like in DoW, where guard and SM come to blows because neither side wants to disobey their orders, all the war to something the scale of Badab.

Here I'm no expert on Dark Angels or Wolves, but as to the OP's question: consider also that the Dark Angels have their successor chapters, which is basically a legion in all but name. Maybe the Wolves got into a scuffle with one of them, and that carried on into open conflict between the wolves and the Dark Angels not-legion. Not actual fluff as far as I know, just an idea.

Space Marines constantly come into conflict with each, with one side accusing each other of heresy and what that.

The Space Wolves and the Dark Angels have always been at odds with each other ever since Lion El' Jonson got whacked in the face by Leman Russ. There's a section about it in the Space Wolves codex titled the Wolf and the Lion (or the Lion and the Wolf).

The most recent and most notable one I can think of between the Dark Angels and the Space Wolves was when Azrael, influenced by the Changeling, ordered a bombardment on the planet Fenris.

At the end of it all, they are all blood offerings for the glory of Khorne. Blood for the Blood God!

Good luck with the games between your mate. I am very curious as to how to fluff turns out.

For the OP the fluff would stand up if the Alpha Legion were behind it. The SW are attacked by AL dressed as DA and thus a war starts. Or the SW get bad intel that the local DA are actually AL and prematurely strike, only to find out they weren't.
Or AL dressed as SW attack AL dressed as DA and Tzeentch laughs all the way home
