Greetings,

I'm looking to add 2 more 10 man squads to my force and have the option to construct either Inquisitorial henchmen with bolters or IG veterans but I am really torn as to which to build. Both units will fulfill the same roll in my list (mobile fire support / late game objective cappers in chimeras or valks). Both units have access to 3 special weapons / carapace armor. Veterans can get meltabombs at 3 points per model with demolitions, Acolytes can get them for 5 points / model with the option of taking as many or as few as you want. They also have the option of adding some nice support charactesr to the squad like a 10 point psyker or a jokero for some potentially nice buffs. Finally, they also have a much better chimera as a dedicated transport, though they lack obsec.

So I have 2 questions I am looking for your advice on:

1. Which would you prefer BS3, STR 4 (possibly with prescience from a psyker) or BS4, STR3? I would love to see the math on this vs say a t4 target but I don't have the time to try and figure that out right now.

2. Considering the options available to each squad and ignoring the rest of the list, which uint would you prefer to take (for a mechanized fire support unit).

Thanks for your thoughts Dakka

Napkin math:

BS3 / Str4 vs T4 target -> .25X (where X is # of shots)

BS4 / Str3 vs T4 target -> .22X (where X is # of shots)

BS3 benefits from prescience more than BS4, bolters have better AP than Lasguns. Ergo, Inquisitorial Henchmen are better here assuming same points cost.

They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines, and they shall know no fear.

Thank you, I wouldn't know where to begin trying to calculate that out without a formula. T4 is relevant because I fight SM and Necrons (well, vs necrons it's more them slaughtering me than me fighting them) and I figure they will be shooting at troops more than vehicles as I have decent AT elsewhere.

Before any upgrades a veteran squad + Chimera costs 20 points more than a 10 man acolyte bolter squad + chimera (and the inquisitorial chimera is way better) I'm not sure obsec is worth that...simply because in most games I play it has never helped me out.

Well, you get ob sec for veterans, but more importantly, you get bs4 for any special weapons you give them instead of bs3, too.
