I can't for the life of me decide what to do with my BaC box so why not try 30k?

books:

Legion red book (had legion rules)
crusade list red book (ALL army list entries from books 1-4)
books 5 (some new army list things) and book 6 (your new RoW + some other stuff)

as for composition of the calth box, a good "basic" list to expand from is:

1 praetor (either the terminator OR the artificer "chaplain") - You'll need him to get Rights of War
1 centurion (whatever model isn't your praetor - Look through all the console types, don't default to chaplain

2 15-man tactical squads - Outside of the srgt. they ALL have bolters, and can purchase extra CCWs (you'll usually want to do this with world eaters)

5 cataphractii terminators - however you want to kit them out. From calth I'd go power fists on everybody + the heavy flamer
1 contemptor w/ kheres autocannon and power fist - One of the stronger builds for contemptors

this "list" gives you good room to expand, and to basically go any direction you want to with your army.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

See this thread, that has an up to date (more or less) list of which books have what.

jokes on you! The red books are 45 USD each, so slightly cheaper then some modern codexes

the black books, yeah, they are costly. that's most of the reason why the only one I intend to buy is book 7 (which should be prospero)
